Title: Ruby Red

Summary: Bruce Patman had never been the type to imagine a future of any kind with a girl.

Damn. She'd done it again. There on his cheek was a ruby red reminder of the fact that he was cheating on yet another girlfriend. One he was pretty sure he could love, if only he let himself. It didn't take much to conjure her light brown eyes, complete with impossibly long lashes he knew other girls would spend thousands of dollars trying to replicate what was totally natural for her.
If he tried just a bit, he could smell her shampoo (something with jasmine) and picture her chestnut hair falling over one tanned shoulder. He could hear her laugh and knew a thousand ways to coax one out of her. He knew a million ways to drive her crazy in ways both good and bad.
He knew that maybe for the first time, he'd found someone who got him, truly understood the lonely childhood and the cold, detached parenting he still endured. Hell, hers was worse (and it took a lot for him to admit that anyone could beat him at anything), since he knew her father was never around while his was just a little too interested in his son's affairs.
He knew, deep down, that they were a perfect match.
And cliché or not, it scared the shit out of him. Bruce Patman had never been the type to imagine a future of any kind with a girl. Ever.
He liked the hunt, the game of it all, the seduction. He enjoyed showing off his wealth and having a little fun up at Miller's Point and then, after awhile, he moved on to the next, always before the first even suspected she was being replaced. It was harder to hold out hope if they saw how little he cared and how easy it was to replace them.
And yet, with Lila, he'd started to imagine weekends at the club and vacations abroad. Maybe not a happily ever after, but it felt like a dangerous first step, this imagining something long term.
Enter Gwen. Or Gwynn? Jen? It didn't matter, he just had to know he could find someone else.
Lila was replaceable. She had to be.
Otherwise he was in trouble.

Note: This is the first I finished (not the first written) because it's so short. It leads into two of the others so it's essentially one of three. Apparently this summer was less about love and more about burning that sucker down and scorching the earth. Good times!
