Tennyson, or Tenney, is the new 'Contemporary Girl' series character.


Oh, come on, AG! You're starting a new line and it's going to be directly competing/offsetting the GOTY and what are you doing? You're making her blonde. And giving her a PoC best friend. WTF.


I couldn't choose between the two reactions. Sorry. Anyway, I'd hoped the Contemporary Line (I assume it'll be given a fun name but who the heck knows) was going to be like an aged up Wellie Wishers where we got a group of friends all at once and then learned about them, maybe adding to the group as the line went on.

Nope, it's looking like at best we'll start with Tenney, who is likely to hit sometime soon after the GOTY debuts (Tenney's book is slated for end of January and AG usually has a release right before Valentine's Day) and possibly, if we're lucky, get another later on in the spring maybe? (Another CG character's book is set to launch after Tenney's.) Which wouldn't be so annoying if she wasn't going to be going up against their first, and let's be honest, she's likely to be their last, black GOTY. There's hedging your bets and then there's ... this.

It comes across as very, "Here's your black GOTY, whose stuff hasn't really managed to leak at all, btw, but for everyone else we know won't be buying her because why would they since it looks like we're phoning this in, we've got a blonde country singer from Tennesee. See what we did there with the name? Ha!"

I... really? I'm hoping the lock down on the Gabby leaks is simply people aren't paying attention or things are going to be super interesting but realistically, it looks like they spent way more time on Tenney. Which is probably because she was slated to be the next GOTY and then things changed. (Also, she was likely meant to be brunette originally.)


Soooo... I'm not super interested in Tenney and didn't think I would be, though I was kind of pleased she'd be brunette. See how well that worked out, huh? I'm hoping to be wrong and that she won't be classic mold because if they broke out the MG mold again, I'd buy her in a heartbeat. (Yes, AG. In the time it took for my heart to actually beat, I'd throw her in the cart and laugh maniacally all the way through checkout.) Still, I'm going to try and get all my negativity out here and wait, ever hopeful, to be pleasantly surprised.

On the plus side, maybe we'll get a Jaya doll? Although they'd probably use Sonali for her, which would make that not a plus for me.

Heh, they could just re-release Sonali in a different outfit and bam. Jaya. But considering Gabby is likely to be #46 in a different outfit, I'm thinking you're safe from the Sonali mold for a bit.

OMG, it reads like every bad trope out there. Here's the perfect, plucky, blonde white girl and her token ethnic friend where we just pulled out some name that sounds foreign to them, just kind of brown-washed a generic girl, and then made her the old AG standard of "likes art class". I'm not even sure what she's supposed to be? Native American, Hispanic, black?

Well, positive for me is that when I opened this, I thought for sure she was just going to be the new GotY and they ditched the black GOTY altogether, so...yay? But yes, very much feels like they're only starting this line because they don't want to work on the black GOTY at all.

Jaya is a mystery and Tenney is such a nod to Taylor Swift at this point that I'm enjoying the hell out of people fighting over whether she is or not and whether Taylor will catch wind of it and sue or even if she could and much amusement is being had.

Annnnnnd yup to Jaya being AG's favorite generic artistic friend. Sigh.

I'm kind of torn on whether I want Gabby leaks as well or if knowing what they have in store would just depress me early.
