One day, when I've got more than just a vague idea, I'm going to write something friendship based. Which sounds fluffy, but there is a serious lack of actual friendships being represented on tv or movies. I'll have to content myself with bookishness. I want something where your 'main' character isn't a self centered ass 99% of the time and you understand (maybe not immediately, but quickly enough) why they're friends.

In my head we're going to focus on female friendships but these things evolve over time. There are some articles popping up for the anniversary of the end of Sex and the City and I've watched some episodes here and there (I'd watch more but the library can only do so much) and I find myself wanting to slam Carrie in the face with a frying pan... and also wishing you saw more of the other women hanging out/doing things/existing without Carrie.

I've been watching Girlfriends and I think one of my favorite bits from the first season and a half that I've re-watched most recently has to do with Toni and Joan's friendship and how, somewhere in the first season, you see Toni being not an ass to Joan and she does it effortlessly and doesn't call attention to it and... I wish I could remember what it is. I think it's how she handles Joan's pregnancy scare. She does it in this way that you believe someone who has been your best friend for longer than you can remember would. And it's a shame they set fire to that friendship so early on because it kind of ignores that bit of the dynamic. I like that glimpse into someone's past and how it shapes them, both as a character and in their relationships.

I want something that shows how hard you fight for a relationship that you've had for eons and how you can resent it and then cycle back to loving this person even as you would gladly smack them into the middle of next week.

I want something that feels real enough that when you're reading or watching or whatever, you feel like you're with your friends, or the friends you wish you had.

I think my single biggest disappointment with a lot of the more popular book series/movies that spring from them, and a lot of television shows, is that they'll give the main character a best friend, but it's in name only. The friend appears and is there when appropriate or needed for plot, but you cannot, for the life of you, figure out why best friend would stick around for main character's BS. (This, naturally, wipes out anything where the best friend is in love with the MC.) I also take issue with the things where you can't figure out why the MC would be friends with their alleged best friend because it never seems to work. This seems to be because the thrust of the work seems to be in favor of OHNOES, It's the end of the world! or Love Triangle Consumes All.

Further ideas for this TV show I will one day have an evil hand in:

4) Probably not the same show as my previous list, but once the show has enough seasons and at least one of them leaves people wondering "have we lost the way?" we'll frickin' shift genres. All this time you thought it was a comedy? BAM. Supernatural! Leading up to this we'll have random episodes that are played for laughs/dreams and then somewhere mid season, ha! No. Turns out it was all right in front of you, waiting for you to have figured it out.

5) I want a mystery series (books? Maybe TV would work for this) where maybe ten books in you realize holyfuck, your hero is actually the killer. And has been. Possibly the whole time, possibly just since book two or three. (If so, we move back the ~reveal~ another book or two. All this time you have been living a lie.

When Hell freezes over and I have my own TV show (writer/creator/whatever), I have found a new thing to add to my list of demands.

1) The credits for the pilot episode will include someone who dies in the episode. Main character will die in episode 1. They will then continue to be in the credits for at least the first half of the season, longer if I need them as a recurring ghost/flashback/whatever. So this means it'll be someone you at least like, if not love. The goal is to make you love this actor and be kinda ticked they aren't around more. But they will be there for more than the first episode.

2) Halfway through the season, you'll realize that you've been rooting for the 'wrong' team. The first half they'll be presented as the good guys/heroes and then come that mid-season cliffhanger time, you'll find out that this entire time they were really the bad guys/villains, because really, the villain thinks they are the hero of their story.

3) The person with all the love interests dying left, right, and center (The Luke Skywalker effect), will be female. She'll also be straight because I want the guys to be the ones croaking. At least one of them will be so obnoxious you want them to die and by this point you realize, "Oh, character X is in love with them. They're gonna die. WHEN ARE THEY GONNA DIE?!?"
