It's National Nail Polish day and I was going to take a picture of my polish collection but it's in plastic storage containers and I'm too lazy to try and make it prettifuls. But if you wondered what colors I'm wearing because you're bored, like me, I have Zoya's Willa on most of my left hand, as that's what I was wearing for Red Nose Day (it goes well with red since it's a black polish), and the rest is KL Polish's Casino Night, which is probably the prettiest gold glitter I've worn in awhile.
In honor of the day, let's discuss my polish habits because why the eff not, right?
Once upon a time, I would go to the store and buy whatever color struck my fancy, provided it wasn't stupidly expensive. I gotta tell you, $9 is about my cut-off for polish, btw. If you clicked on Willa and are now saying, "uh, that says $10..." I must remind you that I never buy polish for full price once it's above the $8 mark. All my Zoya purchases are during sales because $10 for polish hurts my soul. But back to the store.
Sometime before we moved, I realized that I'd managed to buy at least two bottles of the exact same polish and I had it duped in just about every brand that I could easily find. This is a pretty good example, actually. Only I think my revelation came via two bottles of a Revlon polish. Thinking back to the last time I went through the polishes, which wasn't that long ago, I'm not sure... any of those bottles are still rolling around. Huh. Teal and purple duochrome was my jam. Still is, I just managed to lose all the proof it seems. :P
I kinda go by seasons with my polishes, but moreso for the colors I don't typically gravitate towards. Like pinks and reds are far more policed than say, black or glitters which I'll wear any damn time at all. I don't tend to do neons in general, and pastels are the polishes I buy and think they look lovely in the bottle and sickly on me. I'm far more likely to wear metallics, glitters, chromes, or anything fun before I break out the cremes, with the exception of a good, solid black. Since my habit of using a top coat as a base coat tends to result in my polish just peeling right off, glitters prompt no fear from me to the degree that I keep forgetting it's a thing for people who aren't cruel to their nails. My problem with glitters is that they tend to be rough and since I bite my nails when they're not smooth... yeah.
This probably lead to my changing my mind on top coats. I still think a truly good polish doesn't need one, but I tend to throw one on everything now. Which is why I finally caved and bought a matte one so I have that as an option, too. Usually mattes aren't my thing, but every so often one likes the option, y'know?
And I've bored myself so we'll stop. But I must say that I like to compliment people on their nail color choices because when I do, it's genuinely because I like it and they always get this grin, even if it's just for a split second. Even the girl who then told me in graphic detail why the nail salon down the road was never to be used because of what they did to her nails when she had the color I just complimented done. Even she had a split second of "someone noticed!" happy.

Date: 2019-06-23 11:14 pm (UTC)I've been wearing my Crayola polishes the last couple of weeks. I went with Granny Smith Apple last week for the start of spring, and this week I'm sporting Vivid Violet. Classic polishes that don't take a lot of fuss and muss are my jam right now. I'm with you on seasonal colors, too - I like brights in the spring and summer and jewel tones when the weather cools off. (Of course, as I say that, I'm not wearing bright colors right now but easy is winning over color, okay?)
I always wear top coat on my hands but never on my toes. IDK why - maybe because polish tends to not chip off my toes? And I wear sneakers every day so it doesn't matter what my feet look like? :P

Date: 2019-06-23 11:43 pm (UTC)Ease wins almost every time for me. I don't think I've ever worn top coat on my toes for anything beyond maybe a random nail because, like you, I wear sneakers most of the time and it lasts forever. Granted, I also will let the color linger forever like the silver I've been sporting forever at this point(the Insta Dri matte, I think) just because I like to see how long it'll last before it's all gone.
And now I remember why I'm replying now instead of waiting til after I come back! I saw a display box that mentioned your Insta-Dris at work. Dunno if we're getting a new collection or if SH is just doing a summer display of older polishes (with them who knows) but it might be worth keeping an eye out for?

Date: 2019-06-28 02:18 pm (UTC)I wish WnW hadn't pissed me off because their Pac-man cherry shaped lip thing (gloss?) is super cute and I wants it. Which is random but someone briefly had the two displays together.

I'm definitely going hunting for the new Crayola collection this week!! It doesn't appear to have been released yet per the website but we both know that means nothing, LOL.

Date: 2019-07-01 01:29 am (UTC)The Pac-man collection looks really pretty and it blows the Ipsy/Tetris thing out of the water by a fair margin, even though realistically I know I probably wouldn't have used most of it. It still looks cool.
But WnW decided they were gonna slide into the Chinese market and sell in store there. But they didn't say anything at all until someone took a picture of a big WnW display in one of the stores there and posted it online like, "uh, WnW? Whatcha doing?"
I've never been super clear on the cruelty free specifics, but I do know that if you sell in China, you aren't considered cruelty free because of their testing practices, even on brands that do not otherwise test on animals. WnW knows this and made damn sure they kept things super quiet because they make a big deal about their leaping bunny/CF status. And they should because it's one of the biggest things people use against bigger/more expensive brands. "If WnW can do it, you have no excuse!" was used repeatedly when NARS backtracked their CF status last year. WnW doesn't say anything for a bit and then comes out with the 'news' that China is trying out a new thing where they don't require the testing before you can sell... but they can still, y'know, decree you gotta test if they decide you gotta.
This part is murky and where they lose me. WnW had the chance to lead with the news that China is attempting to give up animal testing and this is a new program they've been invited to be a part of to that end. They could've hyped it up or let it fly relatively under the radar but still been transparent about it and I'd be relatively okay with it because I can't claim that I'm someone who only buys CF stuff.
But they didn't because they knew that for a lot of people who are very hardcore CF, the Chinese move at this particular point in time (while the option for testing is still a possibility even if it's not a requirement upfront) would mean the company would lose their CF status. So they hid it. And that pisses me off. Well, that and in the wake of various places pulling their consideration of the brand as a CF brand, WnW doubled down on their CF status.
Now I feel like I need to pass out shots for you to drink each time I said CF status. Also, not entirely sure this made sense outside my head because I'm not fully awake yet.

Date: 2019-07-07 10:11 pm (UTC)That sucks, though. They have really gone downhill in the last couple of years, ever since they got out of the nail polish game. Was the brand bought out or something, I wonder?

Date: 2019-07-07 10:28 pm (UTC)I haven't heard anything about them being bought out but it would explain some of the fuckery. This article is interesting. It looks like the parent company swapped heads and the new (at that time anyway) guy's focus on skincare would explain the odd shift WnW took towards skincare.
