So, was anyone going to tell me that the graphic novels were making Logan Bruno decidedly not white or was I just supposed to stumble across that on the internet for myself?

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand, you do you, boo. I am woefully behind on my graphic novels (and I'm currently pissed as fucking shit at Amazon for unrelated business) but it does kind of pose a problem.

Jessi's intro storyline leans heavily on the fact that Stoneybrook is shocked, shocked I say, that Jessi's family is black in their very, very white community. Logan not being white (to say nothing of the background characters there) kinda means this shouldn't be a thing... but it's also very much part of Jessi's story. So. Whatcha gonna do, books?



Finally, where the hell is my Netflix BSC show? I have been waiting impatiently for what feels like forever! Kristy Thomas would never keep me hanging like this. :P

This is actually my first time seeing the cover or I totally would have told you.

I wonder if he's still Southern.

The GNs do seem more diverse and modern. I'm still miffed Hannie is now black, because it's not like YA world...or even literary world as a whole...is loaded with modern Greek characters. There are way more black characters than modern Greek, so that's kinda the opposite of what they should be going for.

I'm willing to bet when they finally intro Jessi the whiteness of Stoneybrook just won't be a thing anymore. Which I don't really mind honestly. It's fine during rereads because the books represent the time they were written, but in my opinion, it doesn't have a place in the graphic novels if they're trying to represent the current world more than the 80s.

I wish they'd hurry up and bring her in, too. They rushed Mal in so why are we still waiting on Jessi?

I think they rushed Mal in when they thought they only had the order for 4 books...but at this point they should just add Jessi in since they're not doing every single book. Why not have her be in this book? She and Logan could be new together.

The Hannie thing confuses me it's like...there are blatant clues that they are Greek mainly the LAST NAME an already diverse character should not be the one you re-diversify.

I didn't remember whether they were going for a more obviously current time or if we were in ambiguous time-frame (note to self: re-read and catch up) in GN land. Jessi's gotta be showing up soon, though. I really hope we don't skip her pet-sitting. I need to see little baby hamsters, dammit.

I've fully accepted that I will never catch up on everything. I am the absolute worst when someone asks, "so have you seen...?" because the answer is usually either yes, but I'm however many seasons behind or no, but it's on the list.

That said, I was promised BSC last year (and they promised it loudly enough that even my brother noticed and tagged me in one of the announcements and that's just weird enough) and they've yet to announce anything new in months. Give me something, even if it's just casting someone beyond Alicia Silverstone and Mark Feuerstein as possibly the most un-Watson Watson ever.

Though IMDB is giving an unusal cast assortment so who knows.

So my Unpopular Opinion is that they are making all of the love interests black so that they can leave out Jessi altogether. I was already mad that they brought on Mal so early, because Mal and Jessi were a unit in the OG canon, and the more I read the graphic novels, the more I started to fear that Jessi was just not going to be a Thing in GN world. Seeing first Toby, and now Logan, are black in the GNs only reinforces this fear.

But I can't say that very loud because I'm sure this opinion makes me some sort of racist.

Mal needs Jessi! Never have I related more to someone than I did when Mal was all "but who will be my BEST friend?" right before Jessi appears.

Also, who will dance to meetings?

It will be interesting to see if they still send Stacey back to NYC, especially since they are randomly skipping books. That's the only way they'd bring Jessi on board, I think, but even then, how are they gonna justify replacing a 13-year-old with an 11-year-old? The whole point of taking on the junior officers as a unit was that 2 sixth-graders were needed to replace 1 eighth-grader.
