She-Ra Season 5.
May. 16th, 2020 01:04 pmSeason five is the last season, right?
Because I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere and it felt like a series finale with the door left open just wide enough to loop back around if they want to for He-Man or other reasons.
This is basically going to get more spoilery the further down you read, I think, so in case you accidentally clicked OR my code got fucked up, it won't be too bad. Initially.
Overall, I liked the season, and I think as far as finales go, this is definitely a top 5 for me. A lot has been said over the years about good or great shows having terrible finales and yes, a terrible finale can completely ruin your show. A lot of shows, especially genre shows, tend to reach too far for their finale and it shows. I think She-Ra wrapped up pretty much perfectly.
That said, I do have some thoughts.
S5 seemed to remember they never did all that much with Spinnerella and Netossa and I'm not sure if they tried to rectify that with having Spinny be the first of the Rebels chipped and thus the catalyst for destruction on Etheria OR if the writers just thought we'd care because we... should? I'd kind of planned to rewatch the series leading up to the finale but when push came to shove, I didn't. I didn't really have time and I thought I'd remember enough to be fine, which was mostly true. I'm sure some bits will be better or stand out when I watch the series again, but as it was it felt like too little, too late for Spinny/Netossa.
I had Avengers flashbacks to Hawkeye/Natasha and while I love those two, the MCU never did a damn thing with them and then expected the emotional fallout to work because they said it should, despite never investing the time or energy into making it payoff. Kinda the same deal here. It made the sidelining of Mermista and Scorpia, two of my absolute favorites, stand out even more, and while that did lead to Perfuma having some really great moments, I still did not care all that much about Spinerella beyond "hey, she's fat and purple and I'm fat and like purple." Netossa came closer but still never fully clicked as a fleshed out character for me. :/
Did not like the idea of Peekablue being a prince and if you need to ready your rotten tomatoes, please, fuck off. You know what made She-Ra, the original, so awesome to little!me? There were SO MANY female characters. SO MANY. Bow was the token dude in the group and that was fine by me. So the idea of someone later thinking, "mmm, we need another dude, who can we change?" ticked me off. The only reason I'm not more annoyed is that ultimately it went nowhere beyond bringing back Double Trouble AND it also gave me super Scorpia/Perfuma and Mermista time.
I loved Catra's redemption arc and Melog and the fact that Bow and Glimmer thought so much about Catra was adorable. And they were right, her space helmet was adorable. I am going to be forever bitter that the doll line went NOWHERE and all I managed to snag was Adora. Forever alone without her Catra. WHY. I mean, ahem.
I knew they'd kill someone and as soon as I realized they were actually going to follow through on Catra and Adora being in love, I knew they were both safe. And yet, I didn't really consider Shadow Weaver as a possibility for some reason. Was I simply worried about other characters too much to think about it? Probably. But I sniffled when she finally gave Catra what she'd always wanted.
Loved Wrong Hordak. Loved Entrapta not giving up on Hordak, though how in the world Entrapta of all people didn't see Prime jumping to another body, I will never know.
Lesse, what else. While I normally find Swift Wind kind of annoying, I did love his devotion to sending nightly status reports even when he realized on some level they weren't getting through. Also loved him giving up correcting Entrapta calling him a bird horse (horse bird?) and bonding with Scorpia.
Scorpia wise, needed more. But that's just an overall feeling at all times. I loved what we did get and I LOVED Perfuma and Catra fighting over her. ♥ I also liked that even before it was revealed that Scorpia wasn't alone in the Fright Zone, she was still capable of kicking everyone's ass. The later team up with Mermista flooding the area and Scorpia electrocuting them was nifty and really, I wish shows/movies/whatever would realize that yes, you might need to 'earn' the epic team-ups, but there's no reason to NOT use them once you do earn them. Gimme Scorpia throwing Frosta fastball special-style and the princesses fighting together by combining their powers. Don't. Hold. Back. GO ALL IN.
Hrmm. Loved the new She-Ra design to a degree that I cannot articulate beyond excited squeaks and happy flailing. About the same for Adora's wish for the future, honestly.
This is just me and thus I cannot hold it against the show, but sweet baby boy who lived, all the times they just called him Prime meant that in less tense moments (and uh, some more important scenes), my brain would just kind of flash to Amazon Prime and the whole Bezos being evil beyond measure. Which is a weird mashup.
Oh, and I loved Entrapta naming the ship Darla and having to be told not to tinker with it while they're in space because, y'know, crushing void. Of spaaaaaaaaaaaaace.
My poor spellcheck just had a fit.
