Mar. 12th, 2021 11:20 amOh the irony. THE IRONY. The absolute irony of working at a drugstore that is doing vaccines and being one of the last people I know of to still not be able to get a vaccine despite trying to do so. I suspect that if I were dayshift I could just slide on over to pharmacy and say hey, slot me in if you can at some point. But I don't. And so I am fuuuuuuuuucked right now.
Yay.
Caught up for the most part on the graphic novels for the BSC and Little Sister. I shouldn't be bugged by them changing the Delaneys to not be all children of the very expensive corn but considering Shannon's also super not blonde, I'm guessing it's just so that Karen stands out? Some of the changes don't bother me, some seem pretty smart, and some are just but fucking why. Apparently I feel quite strongly about Amanda Delaney and Jackie Rodowsky. The more you know? Although it seems the original show pulled the brunette trick too. Alas, I remember it not and thus the graphic novel must take the fall here.
My guess about Hannie was correct although every single time she was on the page, I thought of Frida from Hilda but I suspect that's simply because I finished season 2 not that long ago. (And it's not every show where you get to say, "there's an awful lot of decapitation in this kids show, huh?"
Oh, and I ordered the Bitty llama/reindeer pajamas from the clearance sale. I couldn't get anything else because their stupid site is still borked beyond all reason (seriously, AG, your sales would jump if you'd just fix your fucking site!) but llama pajamas might actually have gone through!

Date: 2021-03-13 12:30 am (UTC)I am very ambivalent about the BSC graphic novels - I'm Not a Fan of how they've changed the storylines, or of their penchant to make random characters black. Though I'm glad this didn't mean Jessi was wiped out of the series (which was my fear), it feels feel like it's an extra level of conspicuous tokenism and virtue signalling. From some of the reviews I've read, it sounds like they're going the opposite way of the OG books (where everybody was conspicuously white) and there are apparently no racism issues present at all, which, living in our current world, is just as unbelievable.
Aside from Jackie Rodowsky not being a redhead (seriously?!), I'm also salty that Kids Incorporated will never happen. The only thing worse will be making it to Book #18 and missing out on fil-et mig-non.

It's weird that the second set of graphic novels, aside from Stacey being just the worst in her book, kind of shies away from having the sitters be less than ~wonderful~ which is making me most curious as to how round three will handle Ashley.
RIP, Kids Inc. I was looking forward to that. I wonder how they'll handle Stacey's parents and the break-up. I'd imagine they'll just have her dad move back to NY and not have Stacey go with but who knows.
Still ticked about Jackie. TWO THINGS, people. TWO. Give me my adorable redheaded disaster or GTFO.

Date: 2021-03-13 05:18 pm (UTC)Hmm. It sounds like Kristy's Big Day may be the highlight of the graphic novel adaptations. I did buy Boy Crazy Stacey because its Iconique(TM) but I haven't read it yet, though I take your disappointment quite seriously. I didn't even realize they were onto their third illustrator until you mentioned it in your GR review.
No idea how they'll handle Ashley, other than they've completely changed her character (no longer a hippie, no longer related to Andrew Wyeth, which I'm assuming is something that went *straight* over everybody's head because that was the whole point of Claudia being so impressed with Ashley - her connection to an Actual Famous Artist), and made her black (what is up with ALL of the 'guest starring' characters being black?!). But considering the subplot of that book is very Jackie-heavy, I'm giving it a pass since they screwed up so badly with his intro.
I'm guessing you're right, they'll take the easy way out and cram 15 books' worth of storyline into 1 by having Stacey's parents divorce and her dad going back to NYC. What's the point of her leaving if Mal and Jessi have already joined the club?

Date: 2021-03-14 02:02 pm (UTC)Aside from seeing the handing off of the graphic novel baton and thus the new cover, I haven't looked at New Girl yet. I figured they made her Latina but it was just a guess. However um...wtf? Claud still says she dresses like a hippie, while Ashley's wearing spikes?
Eta: Okay, self. Not spikes but also not particularly hippie at all, either. Now I clearly need to worry about my vision 😂
And whoosh on the artist thing, too. That was half the point of Claud's infatuation! The other half being that Ashley was actually into art instead of just being able to sit back and admire Claud's work, obviously.
Eta the second: Apparently she wasn't related to Wyeth in the original (or at least not by the time they re-released the books to all look the same) so that's something my brain just got wrong all these years. I've been living a lie!
I'm kind of hoping that maybe they'll swap to Jackie being a redhead (he was still a lovable disaster) because it's not like everyone doesn't look different with a new artist anyway.
Kinda bummed about Jessi not living in Stacey's old house, as I liked the wistful bits we'd get with Charlotte and Claudia together and when they'd visit Jessi or Becca. I'm old now. You kids get off my lawn!
