AG: April Release Roundup
Apr. 11th, 2022 01:38 amThe new AG stuff dropped Thursday but since we previously looked at the leaked versions, I didn't feel a huge push to comment immediately. Also, I had to work myself up to staring into the void and having it stare back at me.
We begin with the pets. We'll be looking at the 'characters' in both forms to compare/contrast and also because they have them for sale as bundles... and this way I can offset the horror with a bit of cute. Seriously, the mouths on the larger dogs freak me out. o_O

We begin with Daffodil Doodle.

Daffodil Doodle Plush // $40
Item#HJB28
When someone needs help, Daffodil Doodle™ is the first to lend a paw. She’s a girl-sized soft and cuddly Labradoodle dog plush with movable limbs so she can sit or lie down at your side (just like a loyal lab). Girls will love her rainbow-striped collar, soft pink ears, open mouth with her tongue showing, and the embroidered American Girl® star on her back foot. Everyone will love that she’s made with more sustainable materials.
"I don't understand why they want all the big ones to look like puppets." - Cass when I showed her the pets Saturday. I get major Rowlf vibes but not... in a good way. Daffy here is cute enough with the kid but is definitely not a plush I'd buy unless goddaughter fell in love. I do like the rainbow collar though. Also: FORTY BUCKS, ARE YOU KIDDING ME.

Daffodil Dog // $30
Item#HHH74
When someone needs help, Daffodil Doodle™ is the first to lend a paw. This posable Labradoodle dog has short, curly golden-brown fur, brown eyes, and a magnetic mouth to hold her barbell toy.
Daffy here is actually really cute but I'm not spending $30 on these pets. I'm just not. If/when she goes on sale at some point I might, because holy hell, this is probably one of the few pets they've done that actually manages to photograph well.
Oh, and as far as I can tell, the non-plush versions are on backorder til May.

Shi-Poo Sweetie

Shi Poo Sweetie Plush // $40
Item#HJB27
Shi-Poo Sweetie loves strutting through the city (as in New York City!) to show off her elegant style. She’s a girl-sized soft and cuddly Shi-Poo dog with movable limbs so she can sit or lie down after her dog walker wears her out. Girls will love her pink velvety ear bows, soft pink ears, open mouth with her tongue showing, and the embroidered American Girl® star on her back foot. Everyone will love that she’s made with more sustainable materials.
This. This is the one that gets used in Robot Chicken to kill EVERYONE and it makes total sense and I hate it.

Shi Poo Sweetie // $30
Item#HHH78
A true diva pup, Shi-Poo Sweetie loves strutting through the city to show off her elegant style. This posable black dog has a mix of curly and straight fur, a curly tail, and brown eyes. Her magnetic mouth is perfect for holding her purse toy.
I feel that poor Sweetie here didn't have half the effort put into her pictures that Daffy did. I think this version of Sweetie is more easily lent to pretending she's a variety of dogs, which is good, but I'd probably opt for Daffy before Sweetie if I could only grab one. Which is not how I saw this shaking down initially. I'll have to remember to see if anyone actually gets and takes real pictures of her.

Coconut Chip

Coconut Chip Plush // $40
Item#HJB25
Coconut Chip™ is clever and loyal—she’ll stick by your side through thick and thin! She’s a girl-sized soft and cuddly Westie Terrier dog plush pet with movable limbs so she can sit and lie down on command. Girls will love her soft pink ears, open mouth with her tongue showing, and the embroidered American Girl® star on her back foot. Everyone will love that she’s made with more sustainable materials.
"How do you fuck up Coconut?" Also Cass. Seriously, though. Coconut is probably older than some employees at AG and they still did her dirty. The fuck, man?

Coconut Chip // $30
Item#HHH77
Coconut Chip™ is clever and loyal—she’ll stick by your side through thick and thin! This posable Westie Terrier dog has straight white fur, brown eyes, and a magnetic mouth for holding her newspaper toy.
I have a Coconut or two around here and will likely not be picking this one up (price doesn't help either) but y'know, she's cute. She also makes me sad because a friend recently lost her Westie and Coconut reminds me of Joxer.

Purrpley Pink Kitty

Purrpley Pink Kitty Cat Plush // $40
Item#HJB26
Purrpley Pink Kitty is as sweet as can be and loves finding ways to making people smile—like covering you in kitty kisses. She’s a girl-sized soft and cuddly cat plush with multicolor pastel fur and movable limbs so she can sit or lie down before pouncing. Girls will love her blue velvety ear bow, soft pink ears, open mouth with her tongue showing, and the embroidered American Girl® star on her back foot. Everyone will love that she’s made with more sustainable materials.
That name is dumb AF. But this is also the ONLY plush I'd consider buying, maybe, but only on sale because, again, fuck that price. I do wonder how soft these are. Purrpley here is also on backorder til June.

Purrpley Pink Kitty Cat // $30
Item#HHH75
Purrpley Pink Kitty is as sweet as can be and loves finding ways to make people smile—like covering you in kitty kisses. This posable cat has multicolor pastel fur, blue eyes, and a magnetic mouth for holding her yarn toy.
I have many conflicting feelings about this. On the one hand, KITTY. On the other, the orange kitty I got has a very, very smushed face and it ain't cute except at one angle. Annnnnd I suspect based on reviews that this is a problem with the mold and thus all the cats have this issue. And Purrpley here would be super obvious due to the colors. On the other other hand, I also hate the idea of kids or anyone, really, thinking dying their pets different colors is a good idea and that's absolutely a thing that exists. On a final note, I love that Purrpley here looks like she's got a scarred eye and is ready to throw the fuck down. Purrpley will fuck your shit up.

Licorice Twist Kitty Cat // $30
Item#HHK44
Licorice Twist™ is a curious cat who sometimes gets into mischief. This posable black-and-white cat has soft pink ears, an embroidered pink nose, and a magnetic mouth to hold her fish toy.
Licorice is back! But Licorice's pictures also show what I was talking about with the smooshed face. Also, where's Licorice's plush version?! Justice for the cats! Oh, Licorice here is also showing limited quantities which means she might actually be in stock unlike the others.

Barker Posey Dog // $30
Item#HHH76
She may be small, but Barker Posey™ has a big personality and an even bigger heart. This cute-as-can-be posable Chihuahua dog has short tan fur, an embroidered nose, large brown eyes, and a magnetic mouth to hold her pink rawhide toy.
That name is GENIUS. I don't care much for the dog itself but the name is almost enough to make me want her. :P She's on backorder til later in May than the others.

Corrine's Dog Plush Flurry // $40
Item#HJB24
Flurry is a mixed-breed dog in training to be a search-and-rescue dog. This girl-sized plush has tan-and-white fur and movable limbs so she can sit or lie down. She has a knotted bandanna around her neck with a mountain graphic, and soft pink ears and paw pads. Girls will love her sweet brown eyes, open mouth with her tongue showing, and the embroidered American Girl® star on her back foot. Everyone will love that she’s made with more sustainable materials.
It's weird how some years AG will plaster the GOTY's name on everything and some years they'll let the stuff keep its own name. Flurry is just listed as Corrine's dog until you read the description... Annnnnnnnd I hate this one. Sorry, Flurry. To be fair, I didn't love your little version either.

Fancy Pet Fashion Accessories // $24
Item#HJB97
Furry friends can be fancy and fashionable in these accessories that fit all of the American Girl® posable pets. The set includes:
A rainbow-striped harness with a D-ring to attach a leash and straps that go around the pet’s legs and attach with a hook-and-loop closure
A purple webbing leash that attaches to the harness with a molded clip
A soft hoodie with a green animal print, felt spikes, faux pink drawstrings, and holes for the ears
A pair of pink glitter-coated bows on elastic bands that go around the pets’ ears
A blue fabric bow with a white elastic band that fits around the pets’ ears
A pair of pink pet glasses
Prepare yourself for years of people asking "where did this piece come from?" and the answer always tracking back to this. Everything in this set is going to be something that stumps someone even three years from now, mmmkay?
I can't decide if it's genius that they included the bows that the plush are wearing in this set or not. On the one hand, it took me a good five minutes to realize they included those shots because the plush comes with the accessories, not the smaller version. On the other hand, it means to complete the look you gotta shell out the money. I like the rainbow harness and the glasses, don't mind the bows, but can't tell whether I'd use the dino hat or not. Love that Daffy looks so proud wearing the harness and Licorice is debating where to hide your body. Coconut in glasses is cute as hell, btw.

Pup's Place Doghouse // $40
Item#HHH80
Pets won’t have to “ruff” it with this house that’s the perfect size for an American Girl® posable dog—or even a cat! The set includes:
A house made of colorful two-sided dog-and-cat print fabric panels with a sturdy interior for stability and easy setup. It has a carrying cord attached to the roof and a roll-up fabric door that secures with a button.
A reversible cushion that fits inside the house with soft white faux-fur on the top and a pet print on the other side
A pink-and-white food bowl with a pawprint graphic that holds a serving of pretend pet food
A pale green-and-white water bowl with a pawprint graphic that holds faux water
A reversible pink bone-shaped mat big enough for both bowls
*literally yawns* It's fine, I guess?

All The Puppies Set // $36
Item#HHH79
Get ready for puppy playtime with this set that includes:
Three puppies—a brown puppy in a play pose, a golden puppy in a standing pose, and a gray puppy in a lying down pose—all with soft touch flocking and a hidden magnet so any of the American Girl® pets can pick them up just like a real dog mom does
A pink stuffed bed with contrast piping and an embossed faux-leather cuff on the front that fits all three puppies and any American Girl® doll-sized posable pet
A printed paper pet adoption certificate
These puppies look demonic. I can't tell if this is a selling point for me or not. I do like the magnet feature but I wish these were cuter.

Time For A Check-Up Outfit for Dolls // $34
Item#HHH81
Caring for patients has never been more comfy or cute! This scrubs set includes:
A reversible V-neck scrubs top with a printed graphic on one side and a cute pet print on the other
A pair of pull-on scrub pants with a faux drawstring
A pair of blue glitter slip-on shoes
A cloth mask for the doll to wear
A pretend stethoscope to listen to pets’ heartbeats
Torn on this. On the one hand, I like the color better than Kira's, but the shoes are the plastic glitter meh and I don't actually love that the print side of the reversible (yay) shirt matches the dog house (boo). I like that people have the option though. Kira's is the better deal unless you're after the mask or the color is a dealbreaker though. You get hair clips and an extra actual shirt plus better shoes.

Kira's Adopt Don't Shop Outfit // $40
Item#HHR08
Kira wears this outfit to remind others about all the adorable adoptable animals out there looking for homes, like the kittens she rescued in her home state, Michigan. It includes:
A blue tie-dye tank that says “Adopt Don’t Shop” on the front in pink
A long-sleeved black-and-white plaid shirt to layer over the tank
A pair of white shorts
A pink bucket hat with a pawprint pattern
A pair of black boots with white laces
GIMME. NOW. I am so happy that the plaid shirt is actually a shirt one can use and not just meant to wear around her waist. GIMME. I will admit that I am cackling at the adopt, don't shop message given how AG pets give off the "adopted from a breeder" vibe but I am also cackling at myself for still wanting this at the $40 price point when I was just bitching about the prices on the pets.
It is odd that Kira gets an outfit not in her year but since AG stopped officially retiring the GOTY at the end of her year and with the Covid delays and things, it's not the weirdest thing ever. I like that they aren't making it a huge thing but I'd also really like it if the GOTY did get items after her year if they'll be keeping them around. A lot of people get the GOTY for the winter holidays/Christmas and by then there's nothing new to look forward to and it's on to the new one, so to have something come out after makes a certain amount of sense as it keeps those customers coming back. It especially makes sense for Kira since I gather she sold like CRAZY. Anyway, I wants.

Caring for Baby Set
Item#HJC23
There’s a new baby in the house! This set includes everything needed to take care of a new little one. It includes:
A 7.75“ baby doll that’s just the right size for an 18-inch doll to hold, with movable arms and legs, and a head that turns
A flutter-sleeve floral-print top and a pair of pink-and-white striped footed pants, plus a matching headband with fabric bow
A high chair with a soft molded back and a removable tray to hold baby’s food at mealtime
A star-print changing mat that’s lightly batted, so baby is comfy
Two light-pink cloth diapers
A wipe case that opens and comes with three soft cloth wipes for changing time
A bib with a butterfly graphic and satin trim to keep baby clean when she eats
A bowl that holds pretend pureed baby food
A pink-and-white plastic spoon for feeding time
A bottle with handles that can be held by the baby doll or an 18-inch doll
A mini book that’s a doll-sized version of A Smart Girl’s Guide: Babysitting
Caring for Baby Set: now in Black.
Historical Time!

Maryellen's Dachshund Pajamas // $34
Item#HGW78
These fun ’50s-style PJs are Maryellen’s favorites for hanging out with her dog Scooter while watching TV before bedtime. The set includes:
A pink button-front swing PJ top with a whimsical dog and balloon print, a blue Peter Pan collar, and blue cuffs on the sleeves
A pair of pink cropped pants with a dog and balloon print, blue contrast trim at the hem, and bow details
A pair of blue Moccasin-style slippers in brushed fabric with bows on the toes
Of the three PJs released, these are probably my least favorite. Partly because I agree with Mums, they don't look all that comfy to sleep in, but also my tolerance for prints is limited. They were her second in the rankings, btw. I love the slippers, though and I swear each release makes me wonder why I don't have Maryellen yet. Also, note that PJs jumped from their $24 price point up to $34.
Melody's Plaid Pajamas // $34
Item#HGW79
Melody goes to bed with sweet dreams of singing a church solo in this PJ set that includes:
A woven cotton button-up PJ top with a lapel collar and patch pocket in a yarn-dyed plaid fabric
A pair of straight-leg cotton woven pants with an elastic waist in a yarn-dyed plaid fabric
A pair of pink ballet slippers with blue pom-poms on the toes
A pair of blue hair ribbons Melody can tie in bows
I prefer her first set of PJs but I do really like these aside from the slippers. I don't like how they look in one of the promo pictures where they look like they bunch up funny but that could simply be how this style behaves. Love the colors, love the print (wouldn't love to wear this while sick), love the style almost. The pants have that seam or whatever running right up the front is not my favorite look but not going to say it's not historically accurate.

Nanea's Beach Accessories // $55
Item#HGW76
After an afternoon of surfing, Nanea relaxes with a shave ice. She can hit the shore with this set that includes:
A wooden surfboard with stripe detail on both sides, and a fin on the bottom
A button-front Aloha shirt to wear over her swimsuit when she walks to the beach
A pair of red-orange sunglasses with round lenses
A serving of pretend rainbow shave ice in a white cone to snack on at the beach
It's been interesting watching people lose their shit over whether or not Nanea would have/could have been surfing. I don't mind those who point out that maybe always having the beach kids surfing isn't the best idea but the ones who insist it's simply NOT possible for Nanea to have surfed because REASONS are annoying. Discuss the reality, the reasons why it's not likely, but AG's running theme since day 1 has been girls doing things regardless of whether or not their peers would have done so. Samantha and Felicity both do things proper young ladies in their time absolutely wouldn't be caught doing and yet they're beloved FOR that reason.
This set won't be coming home for space and lack of interest reasons, but you do you, girl.

Nanea's Two Piece Swimsuit // $32
Item#HGW75
Nanea and her friends like to splash in the waves and treat themselves to shave ice at the beach. She’ll have a fun day in the sun in this outfit that includes:
A 1940s halter style pink-and-white-striped swim top with a sweetheart neckline and straps that tie into a bow at mid-back
A pair of pink-and-white-striped woven cotton sailor-style swim shorts
A pair of pink espadrille shoes
A pink terry-cloth towel to dry off after a dip in the ocean
This set, however, I love which is wild to me since the halter design means the neck/arm joints are on display and fully visible and yet... I don't mind. I can also see this almost never showing up on Nanea's in a lot of people's collections as it leans hard into the retro vibe that a lot of people are gaga over. But y'know, I suspect Nanea's collection needs a goddamn win and this feels like one. Also, note that price because in a second we're gonna compare it to the other item in her release.

Mele! Wait, no. Mele got a revamp and a new bow but I actually meant..

Nanea's Floral Pajamas // $34
Item#HGW77
At the end of a long day, Nanea can snuggle with Mele in this PJ set that includes:
A button-front swingtop-style PJ top in a blue floral print with cap sleeves, patch pockets, and ribbon and lace trim at the neckline, sleeves, and pockets
A pair of floral-print PJ pants with an elastic waistband and wide legs
A satin ribbon hairbow
These are amazing and I love them, from the color to the style and that lace/ribbon trim is my favorite thing in the world. I'm not kidding, it's something I loved on clothes as a kid and you don't see it nearly enough. But this set is $2 more than her swimsuit and the same price as the other PJs and you get less in both cases. M&M both have slippers, Melody gets ribbons, but Nanea's shoe-less and her ribbon is stuck on a freakin' brown pony-o which means it's going to be a royal pain to actually put on properly. I get the price hike is to keep up with rising costs across the board but this is definitely a case of the pretty carrying everything else. Maryellen's looks about as complicated to execute and she still gets slippers for the same price, y'know? And the swimsuit gets you shoes and a towel for less money. Anyway, Mums and I both voted this as the best of the trio.
Overall, I'll likely be grabbing Nanea's PJs, Kira's new outfit, Nanea's swimsuit, and Melody's PJs. Maryellen's I'm on the fence about and the pets I'm gonna sit out for now. If you're interested, there is a buy more/save more sale going on right now.
Interestingly enough, despite cutting back, I still managed to keep Berry for another year and qualified for that earlier than last year or maybe it was the year before.
We begin with the pets. We'll be looking at the 'characters' in both forms to compare/contrast and also because they have them for sale as bundles... and this way I can offset the horror with a bit of cute. Seriously, the mouths on the larger dogs freak me out. o_O
