Feeling Wild: Express it with sparkles and oodles of doodles

Show Your Wild Side Outfit // $26
Item#HJH78
Dolls with one-of-a-kind personalities will shine in this magical outfit.
A black T-shirt dress with fun heart, star, and unicorn graphics, plus a pair of aqua glitter high-top sneakers with pink laces
This feels like it should've been a black dress that you could just doodle on with fabric pens. I'm guessing it's a crapshoot on how the patterns land and I'm basing this on not thinking AG would really want the eyes to consistently land on the doll's butt. It's a lot in general. Not my least favorite in terms of the dress, but probably my least favorite shoes.
Dolls wearing: 100, 112, 119, 122

Show Your Wild Side Accessories // $36
Item#HJH83
These are exactly the kind of fun fashion extras found at the end of the rainbow.
Includes:
A rainbow mesh skirt with an "American Girl" waistband, a hot pink headband with a large pink bow, and a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses
I...wow. Um. Well. I like the glasses and I mostly dig the skirt, honestly. I think the headband works for some of the dolls better than others, and there's probably a reason they're showing it more with 112 as her hair does a better job of hiding how badly AG manages to do headbands these days.
Feeling Sweet: Flaunt it in floral with a little bit of leopard

Show Your Sweet Side Outfit // $26
Item#HJH77
Floral meets feline in this outfit that's a perfect combination of soft and sassy!
Includes:
A floral-print T-shirt dress with leopard print cuffs and a pair of pink crisscross espadrilles
I... I didn't mind this until I noticed the leopard print. It wasn't my favorite, and it honestly feels a little busy, particularly when paired with the accessories, but I do really like the shoes. Animal prints just aren't my thing and I accept this is my own personal hangup.
Dolls wearing: 101, 109, 117, 118, 124
Show Your Sweet Side Accessories // $36
Item#HJH82
This set has spot-on style to elevate any outfit.
Includes:
A pair of calf-length leopard-print leggings, a straw hat with grosgrain ribbon trim, and a pink purse with a silver metal chain strap
You remember Saige and how everyone lost their mind over her "Paula Deen" tunic outfit? Yeah. I've seen nearly this exact outfit on one of my customers at work. Admittedly she's become one of my favorites, but she's like 60 and is one of those people who looks in the mirror and adds five accessories before leaving the house. The hat is what pushed it over the edge for me, as as soon as I saw the lineup of dolls wearing the hat, I immediately thought of her. I cannot stress how much I mean this EXACT OUTFIT STYLE is a favorite of a 60 year old lady. So this makes me both love and loathe it just that much more. If not for that connection, I'd like the purse but the rest ain't doing it for me.
Feeling Artsy: Live out loud in colorful tie-dye

Show Your Artsy Outfit // $26
Item#HJH80
For dolls that have perfected the art of living life in full color!
Includes:
A colorful tie-dye print T-shirt dress and a pair of pink gladiator-style sandals
I will always have a soft spot for tie-dye. It's one of those childhood memories that brings mostly good feelings (though if I could travel back in time and tell 6th grade me not to buy the full tie-dye outfit and instead buy some jean shorts instead, I absolutely would) and while this outfit feels the least complete without its accessories, it's not terrible. But it's also not worth $26 either so here we are.
Dolls wearing: 105, 106, 108, 115, 116

Show Your Artsy Accessories // $36
Item#HJH85
Colorful accessories combine for outfits with a creative vibe.
Includes:
A button-front denim jacket, a knotted leopard-print headband, and a colorful printed purse
I have mixed feelings here. On the one hand, it's actually a perfectly fine accessory set. It's a little overpriced but with AG's jackets being all over the place price wise, this one hides the AG math a little better than the others. I don't like the leopard print with it as it feels like it's actually meant for Sweet Side, but I guess this is trying to go with multiple outfits say, the Sporty accessories. I probably only mind because I don't like it on either of the MG molds. The purse feels a little small but I do mean just a little bit.
Feeling Strong: Show it with camo and powerful patches

Show Your Strong Side Outfit // $26
Item#HJH79
This statement outfit is packed with power and personality.
Includes:
A camo-print T-shirt dress with printed peace, tiger, and star patches and a pair of white boots with a star on the toes
I like the patches by themselves and I love the shoes. I don't love camo. This outfit was doomed to fail for me. Much as I like the patches, they also look oddly out of place, like they're stickers someone slapped in place for the photo and will rip off immediately after. I suspect it's how big they are all things considered.
This is also the only outfit that has an alternate, because it's one of the two places they're advertising the boys and all the default TM outfits are now dresses. The boy variation doesn't seem to be available separately, which is kind of vexing but also makes financial sense so I won't fully fault them for that. The boys also are shown under Sporty but this outfit has the camo to tie in the shorts so we're putting it here.
Dolls wearing version 1: 103, 107, 111, 120, 123
Dolls wearing version 2: 104, 113

Show Your Strong Side Accessories // $36
Item#HJH84
Power through cold weather adventures in these hot styles!
Includes:
A black zip front puffer jacket with an embroidered star, a yellow knit beanie, and a pair of black sunglasses
I don't know how I feel about this set. It's probably the most cohesive and it actually does really complete the look with the outfit it's paired with, so for that I'm giving it pretty high marks. I also really like the sunglasses and this set helped with my favorite memory of this launch: the people at the board being unable to figure out how to see the dolls without the accessory set being immediately paired/bundled with the doll. It's like they forget that AG always pushes the bundle right out the gate. "I can't see anyone's eyes!" (In their defense, Shopify makes everything blurry as fuck but I'm still gonna cackle.)
Feeling Sporty: When sneakers and racing stripes feel just right

Show Your Sporty Side Outfit // $26
Item#HJH76
This outfit is perfect for dolls that are always ready to put fashion into action.
Includes:
A light purple T-shirt dress with rainbow striped trim that's printed with an "AG Active" graphic and a pair of sneakers with stripe details
I don't hate this as much as I thought I would. It's definitely that rainbow striped trim doing much of the heavy lifting, though this shade of purple is one of my favorites. Would I ever go out of my way to buy this at full price? El-oh-fucking-el, no.
Dolls wearing: 102, 110, 114, 121

Show Your Sporty Side Accessories // $36
Item#HJH81
Here’s the gear to get ready for active mode.
Includes:
A pair of black joggers with yellow twill tape stripes, a baseball cap with crown and gem graphics, and a faux fitness-style watch
I suppose this accessory set gets points for managing to radically change the feel of the outfit it's paired with. The first time I saw it, I thought for half a second, "wait, where did that shirt come fr-ohhh. I get it." This feels painfully overpriced though considering for eons AG priced leggings/tights as two for fifteen bucks, that hat would be ten bucks and feel overpriced at that. I guess using AG math it's not as overpriced but that's only in AG math and um, no.
In addition to the new TM dolls/outfits, they also got a house and stuff to go with it.

AG Living Room // $90
Item#HJF68
Sit back, relax, and change the channel! This is the perfect set for hanging out and binge-watching your favorite show. It features:
A plush pink sofa that fits two dolls side by side
Two matching throw pillows with a geometric print
A pink-and-white TV console with two doors and an attached TV
Three TV screens to insert into the TV with doll scene images on one side and QR codes printed on the opposite side, which can be read by a smart device to visit American Girl® videos on our Play website.
A pretend TV remote dolls can hold
I'll never buy this but I'd have been more tempted at a sale price if the TV wasn't attached to the console. I get that it's likely for stability but it's also vexing. It's cute enough.

AG Grill and Games Set // $90
Item#HJF69
Sun’s out—fun’s out! Fire up the backyard BBQ and get ready for some food and fun with this set that includes:
A pretend backyard grill with legs that fold up and battery-powered lights inside the lid that activate color-change grill marks on the burgers and buns
Two pretend hamburger patties and two hamburger buns with light-activated grill marks
Two canned sparkling water beverages
Two plates with colorful geometric patterns
Two fruit kabobs that fit on the plate with the burgers
A red squeezable ketchup bottle
A yellow mustard bottle
A pair of silver plastic tongs that can be held by dolls
A two-sided pink game board with tic-tac-toe on one side and a bag toss game on the other
Six “X” and six “O” game pieces to use with the tic-tac-toe board
Two bean bags to use with the bag toss game
Two different-colored ring toss targets
Four different-colored rings designed to be thrown over the post of each target
I need you to look at that picture of the grill with the buns to one side and the tongs to the other and admire at how the grill looks like a crab and in the shot with the lights on, it looks like a robo crab prepping to destroy life as you know it. Shit, I might've just talked myself into this set. (Not likely. Look at that price.) I do think it's probably one of the better sets they've done in awhile. Joss's grill got a fair amount of attention and this is basically that but in a different color, and you get games to play! But is anyone else looking at the hamburgers and thinking at best that's a chicken patty and at worst, ghostwritten!Dawn is trying to pass off fake meat as a hamburger? No? Just me? Ah well. I'd consider this one on sale, obviously.

*bites lip* Dear universe, if you would be so kind as to just let me experience being the kind of person who would look at this and think, "yup, just under $300 sounds about right for this, let's do it" on either side of the equation, I imagine I'd be able to change things for the better in some small way.
As it is, dude.
The fuck?
Also, cackling at AG's magazine covers since their magazine went under about a year, if that, into the CYO launch. Ah, AG.

If one ignores the price, and it's taking a lot to do so, this is still a conundrum of a thing. On the one hand, it makes total sense for AG to do their own dollhouse. They're pretty popular for people to make their own and other companies have stepped in to fill the void so why wouldn't AG throw their hat in the ring?
On the other hand this feels like it misses the mark. I get that there needs to be a balance between price and what you can realistically offer, but this feels very expensive for what it is. It's not quite as WTF in terms of not offering as much as say, the closet (seriously, go back and look that one over and realize their big draw is the magic mirror that's really just the ability to spin four outfits.) it's still obviously cutting corners. A good chunk of this is just printed backgrounds with occasional pops of functionality, and for six-hundred goddamn dollars I want each of the picture frames to pop open and offer me extra storage, not just one. I want an actual vanity or kitchen cabinet or SOMETHING. Seriously, this is painfully lacking in accessories/furniture. I think you basically get the shower and the fireplace and they call it a day.
I do like that there's a front porch/entryway. I do think the inside of the door looks a bit like they're going for a prison feel (weird) but I appreciate that there's an actual front door area. I like that there are windows that aren't all just pre-printed. The ceiling fan working is nifty. The lighted hot tub is a choice because I'm not sure who exactly is throwing a hot tub party for like, eleven year olds (at best) but kids will probably enjoy the option. I mean the Barbie limo with a hot tub was a hot thing when I was a kid so I'll try to keep the snark on this to a minimum. I like that there's a backside to the house.
But holyfuck this thing feels like you could do better on your own or going elsewhere and that's not what you want to think when you look at something like this. It's weird because AG's kitchens? Those made me want them. Samantha's gazebo? I still kick myself for not buying it. Ditto for Caroline's parlor. This? This feels like a cash grab that came too late.
Also, this is going to cost a goddamn fortune to ship since AG's not kidding about surcharges. They quietly fucked people over during Claudie's release when people bought the bundles and found that they were being charged extra for shipping surcharges which effectively took out the savings the bundles offered. So yeah. Also, a hundred pounds! You're not going to lug that happily from the store and your delivery person is going to remember if you don't leave them a tip or snack or water or SOMETHING to deal with this shit.
I think we're all caught up now.

360-degree play: There are graphics on both sides of the house so girls can imagine adventures from backyard fun and games to movie nights and more. The windows really work—the panes simply slide up to open!
Warm welcome: The doorbell lights up and plays three different chimes. Security lights indicate whether the front door is locked (red) or unlocked (green) to welcome guests. There’s even a pet door for puppy and kitty friends.
Gathering spots for a girls’ night: Outside, there’s a hot tub that fits four dolls and has three modes of lights and sounds: soft jets with fading lights, bubbles with multicolored lights, and party music with fast-changing patterns. Inside, there’s a fireplace that glows and makes real crackling sounds.
Suite retreat: The second-story bedroom is a calming space with modern style, cool colors, and glittery curtains plus a ceiling fan that really spins and lights up. Next door, the bathroom features a shower that makes water sounds and changes color as the “temperature” changes, and has a handheld nozzle with more lights and sounds. When she’s done freshening up, pull back the curtain for an impromptu fashion show in the changing area!
Also includes:
A planter in the carport that holds three felt plants
A pretend TV in the hot tub area with a double-sided display. It sits on a shelf that swivels for full view and includes a ledge underneath that’s perfect for holding a bowl of popcorn.
Patio lights for the party deck
Working cabinet doors flanking the fireplace
Kitchen shelves
Fabric curtains in the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom
3D picture frames and a mirror in the bedroom
Secret storage: Push the corner of one of the picture frames to swing open a secret door—it’s lit so you can see what’s hidden inside!
