I had this plan where I was going to do a year end retrospective and it was gonna be glorious. Yeaaaaaaaaah, that ain't happening unless I decide to do it on my days off. As it is, let's catch up in non-AG stuff, shall we?

While everyone else in the country was freezing their tits off and possibly getting snow or ice or something, we spent the cold snap freezing our tits off. One of the pluses of the shower having a persistent drip is that it makes dripping the faucets very, very easy. Huzzah! We also lucked out on the water situation by not living downtown where they were under a boil advisory and possibly worse. We nearly made it through the whole thing relatively unscathed until Mums picked me up... Wednesday morning, I believe, and asked me to look at the windshield. Yeah. The last bitterly cold morning of the snap and it caused a break from basically the passenger side to almost the whole way across. The earliest they could come fix it? Today. The one day they've called for rain pretty consistently for the last two weeks. Ugh.
Christmas was pretty laid back, if you ignore Mom burning herself trying to get the turkey out of the oven. Widget was in NC with his mom, sisters, and the girls' father's ex girlfriend and mother to their stepsister. I think I have that right. What's funnier is that woman is also friends with Cass through an entirely unrelated set of circumstances. When people say Charleston is the biggest small town, they fucking mean it.
Anyway, back to Christmas. My brother came through on the gifts. When I sent him my list, I didn't mean for him to buy all of it, but he did. I'm guessing because maybe he considered one of the things to be more for Mom?
In any case, I asked for, and got: lightbulbs for my bathroom vanity, windshield wipers for the car (el-oh-fucking-el, had I waited just a couple of days later, that would've been included in the repair job), and a bottle of Kahlua Especial. Apparently he braved Total Wine on Christmas Eve and the great crash of their credit card machines for it. Mums gifted me the 25th Anniversary of Spice World, the album, and I'm considering my Little Earthquakes graphic album a Christmas present too. Oh, and Mom scooped up a LOL Tween Cherry BB from work for me. 70% off!
Widget said he looked for and couldn't find any MH in store, and I believe him. I haven't found any when I've gone looking and it's most vexing.
Mom and I rode around the neighborhood on Christmas and looked at the pretty lights. My favorite was the house that had a Santa type on one of their porch rocking chairs, but the head was a jack o lantern. :D
Oh, and if we backup to Christmas Eve at work, I'm guessing the cold kept a lot of people away because after a certain point it was nearly dead. Unfortunately, that meant that we had like six people who would not leave and they were definitely stealing. One went out the backdoor with a cart full of stuff but since I had to alert the shiftlead who was ringing up one of the couples who would not leave, he had time to get away without anyone seeing exactly what else he had. Sigh. I do not expect tonight to be so chill in any form.
Time for a mini retrospective of things I've watched over the year. And by watched, I mean these are all shows because I skew more TV than movie most of the time.
Best show I watched for the first time, regardless of release date:

Arcane on Netflix. It's won a ton of awards at this point and I've seen it three or four times now and it's still easily the best thing I watched all year, hands down. And for what it's worth, I'll rewatch a movie that breaks my heart on a yearly basis, but I rarely rewatch shows that do that. Go. Watch. Report back.
Best Show released in 2022:

Interview With The Vampire on AMC. It shouldn't have worked as well as it did, but when it hit, it nailed it. Unlike Arcane, I'm not going to sit here and tell you to watch it, it was simply my favorite released this year.
Best Kids Show I started in 2022:

The Owl House on Disney. The show itself is fucking amazing. It's hilarious and weird and will break your heart (...I may have issues) but the behind the scenes fuckery at Disney means you should definitely go enjoy it while you can, just to spite those assholes. The corporate ones, not the show people who delight in poking the Disney bear.
Best of the Marvel Offerings:

Ms. Marvel was a goddamn delight and was really only hindered by two things: 1) Disney's insane relationship regarding FX and 2) The MCU shows all seeming to have to hit certain beats and none of them really knowing how to properly time their episodes. Watching Ms. Marvel made me happy. There was angst, especially as the show went on, but Kamala's reactions to things? Love her. One of my favorite customers and I talked about how the show was just plain fun and how people didn't seem to know how to deal with that.
Moon Knight gets a nod for Oscar Isaac obviously having a fabulous time and that one episode being so, so good.
Best Show We Will Riot if HBO Fucks It Over Like Everything Else They Touched in 2022:

Our Flag Means Death on HBO. The reason it's not the best of the year completely is because it took me an episode and a half or so to get into it. Interview launched us straight (heh) into the sun. But unlike Interview, I do suggest you watch if it literally anything you've heard sounds interesting, no matter how small. I've gotten numerous people to watch it and ALL of them have loved it to one degree or another. Also, it made fuckery more common. The word, that is.
Top 2 books according to Goodreads and giving them 5 stars AND remembering them off the top of my head.
The Ex Hex by Erin Stirling manages to give Halloween vibes and live up to the hype. Plus, talking cat!
She Gets The Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick if you want YA to make your heart sing. It's a split narrative book and I loved both characters equally. Do you know how often that happens? NEVER. Love it! And it came out in 2022, too, so there you go.
Off to pop my grape juice and booze in the fridge for tomorrow. Happy New Year and be safe!

Date: 2023-01-01 09:26 pm (UTC)Apropos of nothing: I went grocery shopping today (even though I'd tried to do it all on Friday...) and whilst at Target, I saw the SVT graphic novel. I did not buy it, remembering your review and BLONDE BRUCE PATMAN, NO MA'AM, but I flipped through it and apparently there will be another one (unlike the SVH graphic novel)?? I am intrigued. Not enough to spend $14 on it, but intrigued nonetheless. Maybe the BSC graphic novels are doing well enough that the SV universe is giving it a whirl?

Date: 2023-01-01 11:37 pm (UTC)I still owe you that SVH graphic novel. D'oh! Note to self: find appropriate shipper for that so it doesn't get wrecked. That shall be my resolution. To send it, not just find something to mail it with.

Date: 2023-01-02 03:49 pm (UTC)I'd completely forgotten that you were going to send me a copy of the SVH graphic novel, LOL! No rush, but I am always happy to assist people with their resolutions :P
