Work, you're so weird. I hate playing weather chicken with work. I really hate that they don't close bridges here, too. They have Code Yellows and Code Reds and every single time people forget that the bridges DO NOT CLOSE so everyone bases their how bad is it? expectations on whether the bridges close or not. I don't remember when they stopped closing them, but I know it was after uh... what year did we run out of hurricane names, then run out of the backup list? Because I KNOW they still closed the bridges that year, since work refused to close and my brother came to pick me up and we were literally the last people over the Wappoo bridge before they closed it, and the boy basically had to speed up to make it to the bridge before they closed it. But since we moved in here, which was 2014, they haven't closed bridges officially even though they really fucking need to go back to it. (the ice storms and snowstorms didn't get the bridges closed even when the ice was falling in sheets and dangerous as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck)

Anyway, my point is that with the bridges never officially closing, you get shit like an 18 wheeler being BLOWN OVER when crossing one of the bridges that should absolutely be closed... because then you get the lanes being closed and the bridge basically being closed as they deal with that fuckery. While trapping people on a bridge that bounces during regular windy days. JFC. So we had a Code Red:

When the EOC receives reports from law enforcement officers that sustained wind speeds have reached 40 mph, the media will be asked to put out a message to the public that high span (65 feet or higher) or exposed bridges are unsafe for public travel. At these wind speeds, law enforcement officers may not be present at bridges due to unsafe conditions. Anyone who drives over bridges against the advisory is doing so at their own risk.

This is a Code Yellow:
When the EOC receives reports from law enforcement officers that sustained wind speeds have reached 30 mph, the media will be asked to put out a message to the public that high profile vehicles will be advised not to use high span (65 feet or higher) or exposed bridges, and the public should use extreme caution if they decide to travel over bridges.

This applied to every major bridge between here and work, btw. It takes a lot for them to call a Red, and I'm pretty sure it took that accident (I cannot stress this enough: the wind blew over a semi truck!) for them to do so.

So. I read that after I wake up from the world's least restful nap and double check with Mums who's like, "no, I am not driving in that" and I wait til 7ish to see if work will finally call it. NOPE. So I call and imagine my surprise when I get the SM. Craaaaaaaaaaap. I let him know that due to the weather, I don't have a ride and won't be coming in. Mistake, self. Mistake. He offers to come get me. And I consider it, because technically the Code Red had been lifted pretty much at 7... but then I go, "ummmm, I don't really... want to?" because my dude, I can hear the wind as we're speaking. The bridges are still at fuckery levels of Thou Shall Not Pass and when I last checked we're still supposed to have gusts up to 20 when I'd get off work anyway.

And to top it all off, I live off a highway that is forever having issues during NORMAL THUNDERSTORMS with tree limbs and debris, so seeing this:
..DOWNED TREES WILL CAUSE HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS TONIGHT...

Combined with schools and other things being on a delay in the morning because a good chunk of the fuckery yesterday happened after it got dark (and it got dark at 3pm, love) so they need time to make sure the roadways are safe? No, no I will not be wanting to go to work to a place on a fucking island. I get that he realized that as soon as I called out, his plans for the store meant "closing/closing/closing" but um... sugar, that was gonna apply to the entire night crew as none of us live on the island. Hell, I have a bad feeling the SM lives in Mt. P, which requires going over one of the super fucking scary on a good day bridges as well as one of bridges I normally cross.

Kinda curious as to whether or not the store itself closed or not. *muse*

Anyway, I do not like looking outside and seeing the trees dance when I know the ground is soggy. NOPE.

I hope your Tuesday was less stressful.
