Books! More books!
Jan. 7th, 2008 04:54 amI was supposed to cross state lines today. But then the car had a steering issue and well, no one wants to get stuck in any part of the Carolinas they don't call home. It just isn't a good idea. I'm kind of disappointed as I was looking forward to hanging out with Ari and hey, I always miss the road trips as they always land when I have no money, time, or other obligations are keeping me home. While not a huge trip, it would have been fun. Ah well.
Went to Books-A-Million yesterday. As always, I forgot to make a list and bring it with me, so I floundered around, hoping the shelves would speak to me. They did, in expensive voices. Oi. First I ended up in teen, and mostly stayed there, as I'll be honest. BAM has lots of lovely things going for it, but finding a damn thing in any of their sections requires you to hunt down whichever rebellious pixie set up the damn section, paying them, and then hoping they're feeling helpful. Depending on the season and the person, the help desk can occasionally be helpful. On Mondays in the past, I think I could have asked the clerk [are they clerks? minions? whatever] and she might have been helpful, but Mumsy wanted to go today, and she doesn't work Sundays. Hell, she might not work there at all. Who knows.
Anyway. They had a fun 3 for 2 special, which I didn't take advantage of as the only books they had that I could find IN the sale were by authors I'd never tried, but more importantly, the one series I was actually leaning towards? The first book in the series didn't say it was part of the sale and by the time I'd found it on the shelf [like I said, pixies and logic] I'd tripped across the Gossip Girl prequel [Fuckit, $17? I'm sure my amazon love can work some better magic], the newer It Girl novel [library doesn't have it, so I'm justified in snagging, yes?], the current A-list book [a theme, can you sense a theme?], a couple of books in the cheep!cheep table [slim pickings there, but one of them was Goodnight, Nobody], the Dec/Jan Charmed issue, and a couple of others I was debating... Yeah, I had $40 to blow, but it didn't mean I had to do it all at once, right? Except those of you playing along will realize that I'd already hit the $40 mark and most likely passed it. :P I put a couple of books back but was still considering seeing if the witchy series was all part of the sale, or if the first one was left out just to piss me off.
The smart, thrifty me was trying to reason that I should put the It Girl and A-list down, probably the Charmed magazine as well, since I buy them for the pictures and they're never new, and I always read that Ask Brad crap, get a migraine, and remember why I stopped in my true love for the show... Save yourself the trouble, my wiser self said. Worst case scenario, the 3 for 2 series doesn't include the first book, but at the cheaper cost, you could add book one, snag book one of the other series, and you'd still come out cheaper. If they suck, well, that's what PBS is for, eh? Or the book exchange, or maybe the paperback trader. Or give them to someone else who wants them. Something. Be reasonable!
I dug my heels in and told mature me to fuck off, it's my gift card, and if she wanted one, she should have managed to bring the damn list, eh? I looked at my watch, realized it was 12:30, and ran to the cafe where Mumsy was waiting. She went first, got her BAM account working again [score!], got her lovely tote bag, and I dismissed mental Cass shrieking about how tacky it was that they downsized the tote bags, and Mumsy instructed the dude behind the counter to save it for my stuff. Yay! Then Mumsy got a coupon for $5 off her next purchase. Sweet. She was done, so he started ringing my stuff up, and I nearly shrieked when my total came out to be just shy of $40. [See, two gift cards. One for $15, one for $25, but one was an AmEx card, so it didn't have to be used...] Fun math will show that using my second card would leave it with a tiny smidge not worth keeping the card for. Then Mumsy cheerfully offered her coupon and that took it down further. So, I used my BAM gift card, that took it to under $20, and I waffled for about two seconds and then just paid for the rest with my debit card.
In "that's so frickin' annoying" news, while there I decided to brave the crazy and hunt down a few authors. I stopped after looking for, and finding, Rachel Caine. The problem? The book I was looking for was the one they didn't have. *headdesk*
So, the haul that I remember. I keep thinking I'm forgetting something, Charmed mag aside...
