Sometimes my faith in humanity is restored in the smallest of ways. Yesterday I had two moments that made me think I was either hallucinating or that it might be the best day ever.

1) I won one of the Sweet Valley totebags. WOO. If you missed my brilliance [and it's so easy to do because I think all of, maybe two of you cross over into that section] you can catch up here.

2) The more intelligent life-affirming moment happened just before. B&N is having LKH [I know, I know, but wait a second til we get to the good stuff, k?] answer "questions" somewhere around... here. Now, I'd ignored this because I ignore 99% of all the LKH things on my f-list, although I haven't gotten around to just taking the feed off my list. Perhaps because I'm a masochist. Anyway. Littered amongst all the "We love you, Laurell!"s, there was this:

Dear Ms. Hamilton,

How difficult has it been portraying a female rapist as a protagonist?

Do you have to consciously think about the mental gymnastics she has to go through to justify her own behavior? Was the development planned like Jeff Lindsay's Dexter or did it just happen during the course of the series and you decided to continue with it?

Many times the genre of science fiction/fantasy has been used to portray things people aren't comfortable discussing in a real world setting such as racism was discussed in the original Star Trek series using aliens, do you feel discussing the psychology of a sex offender in this setting furthers understanding of it?

Thank you for the interesting perspective,
Pasty

It's not often I love a total stranger, but I do today... and yesterday. Oh, I do.

To cap it all off, my mailbox left me with a copy of Ghost in the Mirror from one of the early reviewer things I always sign up for but rarely get. Figures I'd get the one with the creepy doll cover that makes it so I have to flip it over and ignore, ignore, ignore the scary doll. I know I have the Pullips and a few other things, but old dolls freak. me. out. Luckily, the first rule of true ghost stories has held true thus far. They'll only creep you out in a what if sort of way, not "and then blood poured down the walls!" way. Unless, of course, you're stupid enough to actually be the person walking into the haunted house with five friends, a handful of candles, and the intention to summon the dead. Because that always works out well in the end.

Of course, it has one flaw that might drive me to kill someone, and that's this: We're clearly told that the author took either all of the pictures or almost every single one. So why, oh why, do I need her name credited under every photo? And if this is just how these things work, well, it should STOP because it's annoying. It would be one thing if two people pretty much split the book, picture wise. Fine, I'd get it. But otherwise, note the exceptions and leave my headache alone.
