I still don't like the sound of planes
Sep. 11th, 2011 10:21 pmI was going to try and say something, anything about the impact of 9/11, even if it was mostly just experienced from the safety of my television set, but even after all this time I still lack the words.
So I will say this:
I still remember the way my mother and brother looked as I came downstairs and found them staring in disbelief at the television as the footage replayed on what felt like an endless loop. I remember being transfixed by the horror of it all and holding Widget close when they had to leave for whatever reason. (Get Jackie from work maybe? Take her? Take the boy?) and him pulling one of my braids every so often. I remember the fact that you couldn't get a call in to anyone, and how panicked this made Cass who lives on her phone. It also meant she got to sit around at work and do very little. It's in poor taste to collect bills via the phone on a day like that, you know.
I remember flinching anytime a plane flew overhead.
I remember signing online and stumbling across more than a few "About fucking time something like this happened" comments thrown around. I remember having to assure a few friends from other countries that SC =/= anywhere near the affected areas.
That night Cass and I listened to the radio and Delilah (remember her?) and she played the oddest songs, man. And still we listened because it was what we did. Also, they played the heck out of Overcome, only the version they played spliced in news soundbytes and it was still that same day. Someone was working fast.
I think Ari was still at SLC at the time and I believe I spent awhile hoping she hadn't chosen that day to head into the city.
But mostly I remember this fog and spending the day shocked, scared, and a little bit amazed.
If you read Time's Beyond 9/11 special, do yourself a favor and skip Cheney's interview. I sincerely believe that this issue was not the time to bring out your axe to grind with the current president.
