This is me requesting a zillion cookbooks from the library.
This is me slowly going insane due to only leaving the house for work and a weekly grocery store trip, which I loathe beyond all measure. Seriously, the only thing keeping me from screaming about it is that I do get to leave for work, which is more than Mumsy gets to do. [Her weekly trips are to the doctor, for those playing along at home.] Bah. It's chilly up here, but that has more to do with lingering winter morning and tank tops than it actually being cold.
So, a few weeks ago I bought the first four Private books. There was a sale, I had a gift card or something, and it was a boxed set which made it a freakishly good deal. For weeks it sat in my bathroom, unopened and unloved. Friday or so I cracked it open and read the second book. I'd read the first shortly before buying the set, as it's the only one the library has. Anyway, I read books two through four this weekend. Cut because someone else might have a thing for boarding school YA lit, too. Dunno, might just be me.
I'm thinking this is a series that should not be read back-to-back-to-back, as little things drive you insane if you do. Like Dash. One moment Reed thinks he should become a politician given the way he handles Noelle, Gash, whomever. Then, later she hopes he avoids politics because it would either corrupt or break him. Literary whiplash is to be avoided at all costs, dude.
Also, at the end of book three, Reed is ready to pretty much write Josh off, even if she doesn't necessarily think he's a murderer. The start of book four? It's this whole big, epic romance, and how could she ever have thought he was a killer? Uh, cuz dude was off his meds and freaked the fuck out at the end of the previous book, which didn't take place that long before the start of this one? But these things I might forgive, if I got to keep my Billings bitches. But no. Reed fucking wipes out the cool girls and will, presumably, return to Easton and Billings, where I gather she's set to inherit the throne as it were, no matter what those other broads are thinking.
Ariana's no big loss to me since she pretty much stalled in the character development stages around book one. She was the pretty shiny lure for Reed and possibly the reader. Ooh, how many times can he we use the world ethereal instead of having Ariana do a damn thing? Pretty much for the rest of her tenure in the series [thus far for me]? Ding-ding-ding! Her being the murderer was a bit unexpected if not for me waiting for four fucking books for her to do something. There was some mention somewhere in the first book where she did/said/someone did/said something and I thought, "Bitch is obviously crazy. But how crazy is crazy?"
Noelle was obviously cuckoo in a different way, but it was more of a Kristy Thomas finally goes girlie. You understood that she was the Boss and that in order for the book series to fulfill it's destiny, Reed and Noelle would clash. If Reed was lucky, she'd win more than she lost, and if she was really lucky, I'd actually root against Noelle. Indeed, both things happened. But the moment Noelle took Ariana down, I regreted any time I thought a bad thing about the girl. I needed her to stay!
...mainly because... well, we'll get to that in due time.
Kiran was good for a laugh and a closet raid, but her depth was lacking. I loved Taylor and when they started cracking her up, I could've weeped. Taking Kiran, Noelle, and Taylor out was a ballsy move, especially considering...
I wish Reed would get bitch slapped. Seriously, you made your bed, repeatedly, so you lose bitching rights. You wanted what Billings offered and you were given numerous opportunities to do the right thing and walk away. You didn't. You fought to stay where you felt you belonged, where you needed to be. Which is a perfectly valid choice. You wanted what they had, pretty much no matter the cost. So when they behave exactly as you'd expect them to, shut up with the bitching already! Or better yet, quit doing completely asinine things!
I obviously have issues with main characters. I almost never like them, or if I do like them, rarely is it more than a bit player. There are exceptions [Harry Dresden, though TV Harry plays second fiddle to TV Bob] but I usually want to slam whoever the star of the series is into a wall.
Awkward sentence, I know.
Completely on a superficial note, the newer covers also seem to be sporting some super skinny waifs. Which isn't to say the first four weren't skinny, but they didn't necessarily look like a good sneeze would snap them in half.
Oooh, obviously the library is ordering new books. When I return I'll have to peek and see if they're getting anything good.
