Pictures!

So. I waffle on my AG love depending on that time of year, the position of the moon and stars, and how often they randomly send me a catalog. Whenever Mattel took over, they decided to stop sending them at regular intervals, and I can't say I blame them as I'll go years without buying anything, and the only time I ever went slightly crazy in terms of buying was when I bought my Girl of Today, her bed, and assorted outfits, and even that had problems. This is not the time for that story, however.
Anyway, when Cass presented her roadtrip idea, I was all set to tell her the same thing I always tell them. "No." Particularly with her leading with her Cabbage Patch idea. But then she said Atlanta [I was still saying no] and the AG store. To which I had to reconsider. Realistically, I have very little desire to return to NYC to hit their store, and Chicago will forever be tainted by that news story I read about the family who went to the store only to come home on the wrong train and it was this horribly gruesome account of the aftermath, and yet all I could think was, "Dude, what a way to ruin your kid's trip to the AG store. That place must be jinxed." And I've no desire to hit the LA store. Just... no.
Obviously, I went on the trip. This... is that story. Muhahaha!

This would be the outside of the store. You can, if you peer closely enough, see the carousel on the second floor of the mall. It's a good thing they made the store standout, otherwise I think we'd still be circling that damn mall.

The chandelier. Bad picture, I know, but this is one of those times when it showed up beautifully on the camera and not so well when the picture transferred. Sigh. This was a nifty little thing and I didn't notice it until we were leaving the second go through of the store on Saturday. I also didn't notice that some of the bulbs had burned out until I uploaded the picture. Mostly I took the picture for Dad because light fixtures are what he does.

As you walk in, Kaya is there to greet you. Sadly, again I didn't really notice her at first because all I could see was this wall of books, all too close to a window. I kept thinking, "why would you set these things out to fade?" and then I figured/hoped the windows were treated to avoid that at least a little, although the doors opening would probably counteract that anyway.

This better shows the books and how I sort of saw things. Books first, doll second. Except even that's untrue. These were all taken on our return trip Sunday morning. So, yeah. Anyway, I didn't spend too long looking at the books or DVDs because, honestly? They're cheaper everywhere else.

If you turned right immediately after coming into the store, you'd enter the Bitty Baby/Bitty Twins section. I am not a big baby doll fan, so the Bitty Babies bore me. The twins are marginally better, but mostly I ignore. However, I think this one is adorable and I wish Cass had bought her and not just a replacement Faith, who is... one of the BBs. She bored me then, she bores me more now. I thought the original Faith had been mauled by the cat. No. He just peed on her. And she threw her out.
Um. Replacement. Or Febreeze and some serious cleaning. Bah. Anyway, the BBs were a source of annoyance because Cass had said she was finally getting me my birthday present. That never happened. Instead she spent two hundred bucks on Bitty Baby stuff. Bah.

This is about the first thing I saw. The heavens opened, angels sung, and I wondered what fresh hell they'd put on Samantha. But she was there! And... I could pet her coat. Weird. I guess I'd expected everything to be behind glass, and the bigger displays were, and the stuff with easily pinched things [Mia's bedtime accessories] was as well, but I guess they figured no one could wrestle the doll away and get away without someone noticing. Except everyone working at the store was tiny and easily broken. Not that I'm suggesting anything. I'm sure other security measures were in effect.

Better? Yeah. Oh, Nellie. You're awfully cute, though not enough red in your hair. How many blondes does this company need, anyway? Not including the GoT/JLY dolls, we've got Kirsten, Kit, Elizabeth, Nellie, and Julie. That's plenty.

It wasn't until I got home that I realized they had the holiday-ish outfits out and displayed. *is dense* Kirsten's a cutie, though mine is cuter. Mmm. Poor Kirsten over here never had many visitors. Right in front of the bistro.

Molly, why have they blinded you? Where are your glasses?

One of my least favorite shades of purple, sadly. Y'know, I saw lots of Emily over the course of those two days and I really only remember one thing about her. We'll get to that later.

I think Felicity and Elizabeth are both lovely, but... these were not my favorite two. Didn't like the pink accent and the red. Pink and red make my head explode.

You'd think having a doll stuck to you like that would be uncomfortable.

I dislike Julie's collection as a whole because the 70's make my skin crawl. Houses that scream 70's! for whatever reason actually freak me out. I don't understand this, as other time periods do nothing like that. I guess everyone has their irrational stuff. Anyway, that said, I loved Julie's holiday outfit and the doll they had it on was so freakin' cute, but this is an awful picture. I hadn't figured out the lighting for the evening. :p Oops.

This blew my inner 9 year old's mind. I always knew the trunks had to be big enough to hold the dolls and quite a few clothes. Had to be. But I never managed to wrap my head around how big they'd have to be. Seeing this in person just... yeah. For ages I wanted Sam's trunk.

Sam and Nellie have munchables in Samantha's display case.

Nellie was right under a spotlight, so the color wonked out. WOE. I want her outfit, but it's her Meet outfit, so... it's either ebay, or buying her. eta: Duh, me, it's her tea dress, not her meet. Was I still sleep deprived on the 29th? Obviously.

Mostly to show the new-to-me outfit. Which I still can't figure out the cuteness level of. Yay? Nay?

I always wanted Samantha's Saves the Day outfit, although the picture they used after awhile was Soulless!Sam and that was freaky. Anyway. Behold.

Addy had the display case next to Samantha's. I have to confess I'm not really an Addy doll fan. I want to love her, but there's something off about the mold, somewhere, or maybe it's just in the few I've seen in person, store trip aside. I've seen some in person that are really, really cute and some where I have to exclaim over something else entirely because the doll herself should be spared my mockery.

All of that said, I really love some of her stuff. Cute dress. :D And yeah, adorable doll. But they won't let me break the glass and take the doll I'm actually loving will they? Noooooooo.

I've had a soft spot for Felicity since she was introduced. Mainly because that's about the time I joined the cult, too. Thing is, she's also an iffy sort. Sometimes she looks amazing. Sometimes I think my eyes will bleed out of my skull.

But I have always loved her furniture. Always have, always will.

Although the newer versions aren't quite as awesome. *sad* The clothes press was my dream and they redesigned it to this? No.

I don't understand why Liz was made a blonde, but at least she's adorable. I was seriously tempted to buy her and Felicity as that best friends pack. I didn't have quite enough money to burn, so I thought I would wait.

Felicity was another with a double display. Still not sure how she ended up with that. Maybe because she's so frequently shoved out of the spotlight? I don't know, but yay for Felicity!

I'm not a big fan of the birthday crown, but I still think Molly's dress is cute. Molly was the other to get the double display, although I really don't know... why. She's rarely left out of things.

For the longest time I wanted Molly's school stuff. Her bookbag/lunch sacks [yes, not the box, the paperbags!], her desk... In fact, if I'm honest, I wanted just about everyone's school desk. Because I'm a dork

I think Molly's costume has, um, seriously gone downhill over the years, but I really like the mask. Go figure. Love her trick-or-treat bag, too.

Everytime I tried to capture the raincoat, something would go wrong, usually resulting in a flash across her face. The raincoat is cute, dammit!

Miss Victory. Ah, I used to want this outfit something awful. If they didn't redesign it [and I'm too lazy to go see if they did] then I grew out of it. But for years I would stare and wish. Hope. Dream. It was fantastic.

Oh... Molly. Why would you let Emily leave the house like that? Every single one of us stopped, as a group, in front of the display and stared in absolute horror. Emily's beach outfit is wrong. WRONG, I tell you. The soft bodies were never meant to be seen as anything more than a glimpse here and there. That is just... My eyes! They burn!

Josefina is a very cute doll. I really wish they'd let you buy the ones on display because the one with the braids? Was my favorite doll in the entire store, at least display wise. She was so, so, so pretty, and I wanted her badly enough that had buying her been an option, I would have done so, even though later it would have killed my bank account. That's how pretty she was.

Hee, lookit chubby-cheek Josefina. She was probably the cutest of the bunch because she reminded me of someone's little sister. A little rounder, a little cuter than the rest.

Aha! I knew I had a closer picture. Sadly, did not do the same for my precious.

Kaya! She looks so ... I'm not sure serene is the right word. It's like she's got the answer someone else is looking for, but doesn't feel compelled to mock them for not knowing. I want her, I do, but I'd muck up her braids in no time flat.

I think Jessie was waffling between Kaya and Julie for most of the trip, but I suspect the fact that finding a Kaya who looked a little rosier in the cheeks [be it sun, or the I-just-ran-for-hours-for-fun] was a damn near impossible task sent Jessie away from her. For now. I hear Julie's been a big hit, so maybe Kaya will join her.

Cuz, you know, who could say no to this forever? Still not a fan of the AG horses, though.

Poor Kirsten was in a freakin' lousy spot. Between the Samantha/Addy display and the Felicity display, as sort of an endcap. Or... maybe that was Julie? Crap, I don't remember. Endcap at any rate, and I couldn't get a decent shot [you may make cracks about "like you got any others of anyone else" here] because people kept sort of politely pushing me out of the way. Which was rude because you could just walk around Mia's crap and get to where you needed to go. It's not like they were looking at Kirsten anyway. Poor Kirsten. Where's the love? *snuggles*

Julie's display. At least you can say she's got a fairly small collection, and her bed was elsewhere. I never did get a shot of that because there was always a swarm of girls around it, and the thing was huge. I really can't blame them for loving it. I would too, although orange accents are not really my thing. [Frickin' 70's!]

I hated Ivy's outfit when Nolee wore it years ago, I hate it on Ivy. I think Julie's Meet outfit and her white dress might be two of the three things I want of hers. I have to admit that the Julie display did some voodoo thing where you immediately wanted to buy Julie after seeing it. Very strange. Julie was the one doll we all agreed on.

If you turned your attention away from Julie and Kirsten's mini-displays, and turned around, you'd see Mia's stuff. Mostly I think Mia has a few cute things, but I think my GoT is cuter, freckles aside. I do want this though. I ordered the bedding, so now all I have to do is wait for my next paycheck, or the one after, and buy the bed. Because it's a bed/closet/desk. NEED. Can't explain.

After you made it through Mia's little section on the wall, you came to the Wall That Mattel Built. I will admit that I have done a fair amount of bitching to myself over the years about the quality issues, but really, you could not look at this and tell me that the pink/purple influence hasn't managed to slip in.
Hell, as long as it ain't orange... I bought the purple Atlanta shirt. :D

Some of the JLY dolls. I'm not all that fond of their outfit, so I'll wait. Which is okay because I don't need a ton of these dolls. Just their stuff. Mmm. Stuff.
This was right in front of the second section of registers. It's also where I did my purchasing, because I felt that there was no need to stand in line behind Cass. Yeah, stupid. The moment I got in line and the other guy finished the girl at the register walked off. Grr. I'm standing right here! Ah well.

You wander past the registers and it's beddy bye land. This was the most crowded section aside from the actual line for the register, and that's because so many people just wanted to see all the PJs. I randomly took this because I felt I should get something, and also because it was before I realized I'd never be able to get any other shot due to so many people, so little space. I want to go back when I have gobs of money and when it's not busy.

If you head back around towards the front register/book section, you'll come across more of Julie's stuff.

If you continued left past the PJ's you'd get the Just Like You clothes as well as Coconut. I bought the witchy costume and anyone who feels like lecturing me on how witches wouldn't dress like that can step in the back of the line where my cat will claw your face off.

Kit's Treehouse of Horrors. I just cannot fathom where you'd put this thing. I guess, if Thomas were a girl or so inclined towards dolls, and Sean cleared out the crack-den, it'd go in a room like that. Hell, if Thomas hadn't crammed two bedrooms worth of stuff in one, I guess that could work, too. Still, rather impractical. I do like the photos though. I think Ruthie's outfit, which you can't see, is ugly. That is all.
Oh, and I never managed to snap a picture of Kit's display. Um, oops?

It took Cass a good twenty minutes for her to get the girl at the first register to realize the silver eye was a defect not of Cassandra's causing, and thus she should be returned and fixed for free. Management had to come over, shoot Tiff a look, and point out that hello, obviously not going to make Cass pay for a new head, and wandered off after pointing out that return shipping would probably apply. In Tiffy's defense, I'm guessing this was her first case of silver eye. Almost well handled, Tiff. Almost.
Oh, and that's Destiny. She only looks drunk because she'd been smooshed between Jessie and me for the last six hundred or so miles.

That's just the AG section. Other pictures to come as I get less twitchy.

Huh. Should I mention I work for the woman who invented American Girl? I have her home address and everything. ^_^

Wow, those are neat! Glad there's not one of those near me. I read a few of the books when I was younger, but never really got into them, though I'm not sure I even knew that stuff existed. They all pretty much look the same to me, though Julie does have a more mature look about her for some reason as opposed to Josefina who just looks old. :p That tree house is freaking awesome though. And Molly's costume is one hot mess.

Are you asking about that white dress with the criss-crossy things? It's a nay for me. I should post pics of my girl but she's hella loose and can pretty much just sit there. Which dolls do you have?

History and books and toys. They had my number before I even knew what had happened. And if someone *glares in the direction of the maternal unit* would pay off their library fine I could re-read the books and see what horrible changes they made so as not to confuse poor small children with the differences between the movies and the books.

*cackles* Poor Josefina. I think the damn near identical face molds is what kept me from wanting to OD on the dolls themselves, although the monetary issue probably didn't hurt. The Pullip army points out that for what I paid for Ruthie and Mia's stuff, I could have bought another Pullip or two.

And yush, Sam's criss-cross-y dress confounds me. Sometimes it looks cute. Sometimes it looks stupid. But mostly I just want her frilly tea dress, which makes me question whether I'm really me because frilly is not something I do. *ponders*

In the beginning there was Samantha:

Then I decided Sam needed a friend, and after months of telling lunch to fuck off and pocketing the money, Kirsten was bought:

And they introduced the Girls of Today dolls and I needed a redhead.

Only mine came in that huge overized white shirt, strange maroon shirt/leggings combo, with that vest and blossom hat. Because that's the 90's in a nutshell, I suppose. Sadly, my redheaded love never really got named because I had a name all picked out and when she came, she looked so little like the photo that the name didn't work. And... I kept waffling. The closest she came was Heather, but then I met a Heather, and Heathers are bitches. And not fun, cool Heathers bitches. Just... bitches.

And however many years later, I'm waiting for Ruthie to appear.

It's a good thing dolls aren't alive or anything, because Sam and Kirsten would kill me if they knew I'd gotten her accessories before theirs. :P

See how I blather when I'm sleep deprived?

I just don't... GET... these dolls. And the prices are out of control! The good news is, they're not aimed at any demographic I fit in to, so all is well! :)

I do appreciate your decadent picture post, and at the very least may want to browse one of these stores in the future.

The stores are fun, so long as you have an escape route planned.

I probably wouldn't get the dolly allure either, except they got me when I was young. Sucked my soul in nice and neat before I even knew what happened. Either that or the catalog pages were laced with crack.

... Which would explain so much. Icon love!
