Oh, 80's nostalgia. Why do you vex me so?

bsc_snark is having a bit of a discussion as to whether or not "retarded" was the 80's version of "gay" in terms of insults. Which is causing a couple of reactions.

One- I was 7 in 1988 and I'm feeling old admitting to that because people are saying, "I guess it was used more back then." Back. Then. DUDE. Half of you lot should be old enough to not be able to use that phrase with a straight face. DUDE.

But more importantly, I'm wondering if I believe it or if they're just reaching a tad. General insult used for a variety of purposes? Yes. Over-used, in fact? Yes again. Used in ways that just doesn't make sense, all things considered? Mmm-hmm. Yet with that all laid out, it still doesn't ring as true to me as I gather it does to other people and I can't figure out why.
