Soooooo...

Season (mid season?) finale for Pretty Little Liars. It has Holly in it, so if that's an incentive, you should consider yourself warned that it's not a huge scene, but it's a very sweet one.

If you need a bit of a recap to get you through, here's my very lame/half-assed attempt: Mona's having her birthday and invites Hanna and the rest of the PLLs to her party. "First one's for my bestie, the rest are for my bestie's other friends." Which manages to be sweet and bitchy all at once. If you weren't such a bitch to Lucas, I'd tell you to never change, Mona. But you are, so get rid of that flaw and... we'll be cool.

Anyway, only Hanna wants to go, but the others agree with A sends them a text that tells them that Mona's glamping (glam + camping = glamping. This trend of word smooshage can die now, thanks.) trip is a scavenger hunt for A's real identity. When you make the PLL drinking game during the off-season, one of the "take a shot" requirements will be for each time A calls them bitches. Your liver will not survive this episode if you do not institute a maximum shot rule, though.

Aria and Byron have a bit of a heart to heart and a bitchfest over the laundry and the way the house is sort of falling apart without Ella around. Byron wants to know if Aria is still going to lunch with Ella and how badly Aria thinks Ella would react if Byron tagged along. "She asked me to give her space." "She moved out. How much more space can she need?" Obvious, but truthful enough.

Aria and Ella have their lunch date and the water works might start if you're easily affected by Holly sweetness. Fair warning the second!

In keeping with our plan to mend fences, Spencer and Melissa are acting semi-cordial to one another and it's freaking Spencer out. Melissa lets it slip that Ian asked her out. Spencer flashes back to the year before when Ian was helping her with field hockey and then they... made out. Because Spencer really likes her older sister's boyfriends. In this case the fact that the show changed the girls' ages makes a lot of sense. It was beyond creepy (if you over thought it) when Ian, the high school dude, was making out with a middle school Spencer and Ali. Now he's probably about the same age difference, but college/high school difference is less icky.

Out of guilt, Spencer convinces Melissa to go out with Ian again. Spencer, your logic ship is broken. The boy hooked up with you while dating your sister and then dumped her. I'm thinking that ship sailed and sank the way it was supposed to. What do I know though? Melissa has fun on her date, and Spencer admits her brief fling with Ian to the PLLs.

Emily and Maya are cuddling on Emily's bed when Em gets a phone call from someone who doesn't identify themselves. Em grabs the phone and no one says anything. Then they hear someone in the house, coming up the stairs towards them. Closer and closer... and closer and then, bam! Daddy's home from the war. Huzzah! Emily's mother dismisses Maya kind of rudely, but later you find out that someone has sent her the photo booth kissing photos of Maya and Emily. For a moment Emily sounds like she's going to confess her feelings for Maya (or something, anyway) but chickens out in the end. Funny. You can claim to be friends with the boy wanted for Alison's death, but the lesbian relationship is pushing it too far.

If tv!Emily's mother is like book!Em's, girl had better start packing for scared straight camp.

Speaking of scared, Emily gets a surprise visit from Toby, who is now wanted by the FBI because A sent a video of Ali flirting with an older boy and Hanna identified the sweater she was wearing as Toby's because she knows clothes. Toby scares the crap out of Emily, but she believes, somewhere deep down, that he might be innocent. He explains that the tattoo (9/1 Free At Last) has nothing to do with Ali's death, but everything to do with it being the day he and Jenna broke up. Apparently their relationship was consensual and Jenna said otherwise because she's still in love with Toby. In any other situation I might call B.S. but the way Jenna acts? Yeah, I'll believe it. Emily's not so sure, so Toby... for some reason tells her where he'll be that night before he's leaving. (Behind the church. I giggle to myself since you can't say such a thing around here because there are entirely too many churches for that.) When he does this, I wave goodbye because I'm pretty sure this means one of two things will happen.

1.) Someone will call the cops.
2.) He's gonna die.

It's option 1 and the song and the scene are all so friggin' sad. :( BUT! Since I was pretty sure he was actually going to die, I was relieved. Toby lives to see another day... for now, anyway.

Aria and Noel have apparently been seeing each other and Ezra is jealous as hell. A leaves a note for Aria to read a poem that Ezra wrote about her. It is... speshul.
B-26
It’s a number.
It’s a song.
It’s a girl.
Smooth.
Pearl joy packed.
Gold falafel,
As through ice.
It’s four-thirty.
Morning with
Phone calls.
It’s deaf mute.
It’s cheap.
A foreign car.
Maybe bingo.
Lucky night?
Something says
It smells bad.

Yes. YES. Noel, you moved to the head of the pack. Anyway, Aria confronts Fitzy and Noel overhears the end and then later Fitz and Aria make out in a car while A sneaks up behind them in the car and writes "I see you" on the back windshield.

Which takes us to Hanna and Ashley. Ashley (hanna's mom) is having some serious money issues. It appears they're going to lose the house, but then the old lady who makes a yearly... deposit or something comes by and conveniently leaves her key. Ash swipes the money.

Hanna time! Mona swings by before school and starts to hammer out the details of her birthday. Proving that Ashley is not mom of the year, Mona feels okay enough to say she wants lunch out, which would involve skipping school. Ashley scolds her and Mona lies and says she meant dinner. Definitely dinner. Thing is, it's adorable until Hanna keeps trying to get out of the super expensive meal because she knows her mother cannot afford it. Ashley gives her the last hundred in her wallet and Mona approves.

The FBI comes to town with the previously discussed video of Ali and her older boy who is never seen on camera. Due to this, Hanna cannot skip school with Mona. Her text reply from Mona? Screw you. Later people are making fun of Hanna and her liposuction and Mona breaks up with Hanna and replaces her with Riley and... the other one. She claims to have gotten a text from A which only makes me suspect her of being A all the more!

The glamping trip is cute for the best scene of all: When Spencer returns from looking around for clues, Aria and Emily have HUGE hair. "What happens if you touch it?" is adorable, Spencer. You moved up for that.

Eventually the girls figure out they're supposed to be at Wright Playground where they (well, Spencer and Emily) find proof that Ali had a thing with/for Ian. (heart with names carved in a tree.) Aria's busy making out with Fitz and being busted by A. Hanna sees A and either knows who A is or really, strongly suspects. She texts the others and says she knows who A is and is running towards them in the parking lot when A runs her down.

Book Hanna says TV!Hanna won't remember a damn thing until it's too late.

The episode ends with A watching the video of Ali in Toby's sweater again. Only now you see that it ends with Ian on camera as Ali films him. Dun-dun-DUN.

If I can't have Mona as A, I want Ian to be A because otherwise he's going to end up as worm food, rotting all over Melissa later. Ew.

It's not my favorite episode, but it's a really, really good one and it balances a lot of storylines really well.
