What the hell is this? Hundreds of lurid and dramatic covers stood on the racks before her, and there was, she felt, "nothing, not a thing, that I could imagine giving my daughter. It was all vampires and suicide and self-mutilation, this dark, dark stuff." She left the store empty-handed. What's that saying?
Oh. Yeah. Don't judge a book by its fucking cover. If we're going to spend the rest of the article waxing poetic about the good old days when people had decency and morals and did not speak of things and let them fester and whatever else, then one should at least have to decency to point out that little gem.
Thing is, I will grant you there is a lot of dark to be found in the YA section. A lot. And there's twice as much stupidity. But more than both of those things combined, there is a ton of really good stuff waiting to be discovered. I spend a lot of time reading YA books for that reason. Of course, I have two brain cells to rub together and a few more as backup just in case. I'm not so sure this is the case for some people.
