A little more than a month ago, Cass told me she'd started selling Scentsy stuff. I'd never heard of it. Apparently it's this big thing elsewhere in the US, but I'm guessing the local Scentsy sellers aren't really doing their jobs or maybe they're not allowed to paper the market like the Avon people do? (Seriously, what's the deal, Avon ladies? Anytime I go to the store and WANT a catalog, I walk away with nothing, but if I don't have any money or desire to flip through your catalogs, BAM, 600 descend from the heavens!) I'm not sure. But I did the friend thing and let her work her spiel because, like I said, that's what friends do. They listen to you try and sell them stuff and then, because they love you and feel badly for you having to sell stuff to your friends, they buy stuff. That they then bury in the closet and let us never speak of this again!

Only dude, I'm terrible at that second part unless there's a problem. So... I deferred purchasing anything until I got paid and had time to flip through the website to see what, exactly, she'd gotten herself into. (Save yourself the trouble, don't look this up on youtube. You might want to shoot yourself.) I lack the dominant gene that allows me to sell such things because, y'know, I'm a doormat. Every relationship needs one, let me be yours! Wait, no. Uh, anyway.
Research! So, wow. This explains why other stores have been selling these wax warmers that plug in. I've had no interest in those because I like my candle one and it's little wax melts. But I can't say this to my friend, can I? And also, dude, I'm running low on those wax melts. (Want more Sparkling Cherries.) Sooooooo...

I hit youtube to see what's what. There are eleventybillion videos on things, but most of the ones reviewing the stuff seemed to make the same couple of points:
It's safer than burning a candle because the wax doesn't get hot enough to burn you (demonstrate this by sticking your hand in the wax, pulling it out, and peeling the wax off repeatedly because it's fun.) and also the fire risk is diminished because now the kids/pets won't be knocking the candle warmer over and phoosh! goes the house.
I was going to bullet point these things, but really that's about all I got out of it. You can stick your hand in the wax and peel it off.

  Dude, I'm sold.

I buy some stuff, scents unsmelled. If you decide to do some purchasing of your own, let me warn you that unless you have a finely tuned sense of smell and PR BS detection going on, just assume that if you like the blurb a little too much but you can't figure out if the scent will be appealing, odds are good it'll be one that makes you cry tears of bitter disappointment, but if you think the smell sounds like one you'd like anyway, you will clasp that sucker to your chest and declare you will NEVER be apart again.

I also bought a warmer because I gather the other brands (which I do not own anyway) do not all heat to the same temperature and this could cause me to not be able to play in the wax. Also, remember? We buy for the friend's sake. I chose:

Graphite.

A tale of wax melting, in pictures:

This is graphite in person, sort of. It's prettier in person (closer to the stock photo than I'd lead you to believe.) I'm pretty pleased with it. Graphite is a mid-size warmer which means he's (cuz he's a he) fairly small and will not be the focal point of your decor by any means. But he gets the job done and looks good doing it.

Photobucket
Angled down onto the warmer. Ooh. Ahh. This top piece lifts up so that you can pour your wax back into your plastic container when you get tired of the scent, unlike the candle warmer that pretty much forces you to endure the smell longer than you would like. Graphy and I have this pouring thing down easy which is nice. I haven't spilled anything so it's mess free and you don't end up with half your wax on the floor. Nice.

Photobucket
They show you the top of the pack on the website but don't seem to show a lot of the underside. Since this shows you how many melt pieces it semi-naturally breaks into, I figured it was the more important view.

Photobucket
There are instructions on the underside of the lid (just noticed that) and this is the wax on the inside. Relatively smooth if that's your thing. I dunno, it's an observation. You break off whatever piece(s) you want and I'll be honest, it's less 'break' and more 'pull' but it's also the start of the summer season here so that'll probably have some effect.

Photobucket
And then you pop the little wax melt on the burner and wait. Or you can swirl it around on the burner for funsies if you're like me and like the melting of the wax. It takes about an hour for it to melt completely, a little more if the room is cold and a little less if it's particularly warm already. I've switched between two scents prior to this and they don't evaporate quickly. I consider this a serious bonus given the price.

I also picked out three scents and fell in love with Black Raspberry Vanilla. Cass reminded me that this smells nearly identical to something Bath and Body Works sold about ten years ago so... yeah. That explains a lot. Thing is, I was a little wary of it because the first time I opened it, bam! It's a lot of scent packed into one small space, y'know? But I tried it out (in the name of SCIENCE) and... love. So that's good to know.

Anyway. Cass visited this weekend and brought her bag o' tricks with her, so now I've got a list of potential scents a mile long. I also have about six scents floating around here and Widget wants one of his own.

In her bag, she had this little gem:

Dragonfly Damsel

I'm still not 100% sold on the idea of a plug in with a wax melt so close to the electrical outlet for standard floor-outlets. That said... my bathroom (and the one downstairs) has one on the counter level. I was willing to write this off as a no-go til I saw it and it's really freakin' awesome. So, yeah. Widget was also enamored with it. (This one is more green in person which makes it prettier than the photos show.) Next time, I think. Or else the jack-o-lantern..

Anyway, here's the closeout page if that's your thing. They also go beyond warmers and wax melt scents to stuffed animals and room sprays and things, but... I'm here for the melty stuff thus far and that's all I can say. The plush was very cute and if you do find a scent you love and for some reason want to be able to shove a stuffed animal at someone and demand, "Smell its butt!" it's definitely the way to go.

One thing I did think was nifty was that the charitable cause warmers donate 100% of the proceeds to the cause it represents.

So, go. Kill some time, like some stuff or laugh til it hurts. I told her I'd try it out and review it. Overall? I'm kind of miffed I'd never heard of it before. Think of all the Halloween themed stuff I've missed! I'm happy with the wax melts themselves and while I do not foresee myself buying an army of warmers, I do have my eye on a larger one for the living room and one of the plug-in nightlight ones. So go, help a friend of a friend and be secure in the knowledge that when the time comes, I'll be obligated to do the same for you. ;) Or, like I said, laugh at the mental picture of me shoving a stuffed duck at people, ordering them to smell its butt. Because I did. I totally did.
