EAH Roundup?
Nov. 9th, 2015 05:06 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I believe way back before my vacation I said I was going to blather on needlessly about EAH dolls, right? Well, it's taken awhile because for a line that reissues itself like mad (even over releasing new dolls) there's still a lot to go through and consider. Also, I'm lazy so that probably didn't help, and my insistence on using pictures did me no favors either. In any case, I've finally possibly finished. ;)
Fav versions of each character. We're not including the smiley molds for Raven (well, hers is a smirk), Apple, or Maddie since I don't think they're officially out yet. (And CS is denying they're even a thing. Woo?) We're also either not going to include anyone who only has one version or we're gonna dump them all in one spot. I'll figure it out. Oh, and lines that haven't hit are also (mostly) excluded for now.

Dexter:
So... this is awkward but I don't own any of the Dexters. With him, you've got two and a half choices. His sig version in all its glory, his sig version stripped down, and his date set with Raven. Which is probably how I'd rate my interest in his dolls, actually. Only the fact that he's with Raven means I'd probably be slightly more interested in the date set. *cough* But as for his dolls? Yeah, sig version is the only one I am slightly interested in and I haven't gotten him yet so... *shrug*
And... it appears that for whatever reason, when I made Dex's graphic, I did his in god only knows what order. *facepalm*
To the girls. Least to Best, but the characters themselves are in no real order.

Briar Beauty:
Legacy Day -> Spring UnSprung -> Way Too Wonderland -> Thronecoming -> Hat Tastic -> Getting Fairest -> Sig
Sweet flip, this is gonna be hard. Huh. I did not realize I liked the Sig so much, but the science has spoken! LD is so far down because she looks so sweet, so serene, so pretty but she doesn't really scream Briar to me. I forget what she looks like (but not that she exists) so that's how she wound up on the bottom. I do remember seeing LD dolls and thinking she was the best of the bunch originally. My tastes have changed (Apple is the best of LD1) but in general all Briar dolls are nifty enough to give a second look to.
SU falls victim to the usual SU problem, in that the doll is way too flippin' busy. But I really do like the introduction of blue, so maybe if I saw her in another outfit she'd rank higher. W2W is mocking me with never appearing in store and being a bit much online anytime I look. Just out of reach. Briar, I will say, gets a lot of unusual looks, and I appreciate that. Thronecoming is one I want desperately but it just hasn't worked out for me yet. I think the original price was insane and she wasn't really everywhere (because stores realized she was gonna shelf sit?) and my Walmart either never marked her down OR someone snagged her before I could. Hat Tastic is cute, though if I'm honest she's probably a little bland when you compare her to others, but my HT love runs true. Getting Fairest Briar is somehow sweet without losing her feeling of being Briar (unlike LD) and I just adore her, really.
Fine. There's no science involved whatsoever. NONE.

Apple White:
Thronecoming -> Way too Wonderland -> Mirror Beach -> Hat Tastic -> School Spirit -> Royally Ever After -> Legacy Day -> Sig -> Getting Fairest
Let me preface my Apple entry with this: the more fandom hated Apple, the more I loved her. I didn't agree with her, but I understood her and why she was doing what she was doing. I'd have been onboard for Evil!Apple (still onboard, really) to last longer than a spell. I was onboard for Apple and Raven switching legacies somehow. Basically, I find Apple incredibly interesting and her dolls are usually very pretty, though they do tend to somehow be very bland and yet a bit OTT all at the same time. How this is possible, I shall never know.
Thronecoming? Enh. WtW Apple is unusual and I like the look in motion, but unless a sale happens, I'll be okay missing her. It's just not my thing, I guess. Mirror Beach is interesting and one I'm considering snagging because I like that she looks a bit harsher than usual. She'd make a good villain!Apple. Hat Tastic Apple is actually the least interesting of the line for me and I only bought her because one day I will have them all and because she was at work and I was having a shitty, shitty day. I do like the red streaks, though, and her whole politician's wife vibe.
School Spirit Apple looks really cute and one day will likely follow me home. Royally Ever After is one I need to see in person. I never know how I'll feel about the deluxe versions that break out the 'real eyelashes' because some dolls I love and some, well... no. I like the idea of her but she might also forever remind me that Evil Queen Raven will forever elude me.
Legacy Day Apple is one who has an awesome promo pic but in reality things start to wobble. I really like her shoes, but I like them because someone compared them to being more of a... not stripper, but call girl kind of thing. So really, my taste should not be trusted. :P
Sig Apple ranks so high because her outfit is perfection. The doll itself leaves a bit to be desired (fluffy curls are a mess for one) but the person who designed Apple's outfit should be quite proud of themselves because it's gorgeous.
I think GF Apple is gorgeous. The only reason it took me so long to get her is that she was either freakishly expensive (no, Target, she is not worth $33!) or she would fly off the shelves.

Raven Queen:
Thronecoming-> Date Night -> Sig -> Legacy Day -> Way too Wonderland -> Enchanted Picnic -> School Spirit -> Getting Fairest -> Evil Raven Queen
Raven was a smidge easier than I thought she'd be, actually. As a doll, Raven suffers from a serious case of her artwork (animated or otherwise) being infinitely prettier than the doll, which leads to resentment on my end. Sorry, Raven. As such, I don't have a ton of Ravens though I do like her character.
Thronecoming doesn't woe me, although the darker makeup is far more Raven than say, Getting Fairest. Date Night is pretty and I'll be buying her, probably, but she comes with Dexter and again, very subtle makeup that looks better in the animated form. Sig is a case of the outfit being better than the doll, for me, and while normally this would rank higher (see Apple), I'm not as in love with the outfit as I am with other character's Sig looks. (See Apple again.) LD feels like her makeup should be MORE somehow, but enh. I've tried to work up enthusiasm for this look, but honestly, I think it'd look better on another Raven. Thronecoming and LD aren't switched because I like LD's outfit more. WtW Raven is stuck with a playset so that's why she's there (and I would've wanted Dark Phoenix!Raven anyway). I like the Picnic line but Raven's the least interesting of the bunch. School Spirit Raven reminds me of the woman who plays/played Adult Wednesday Addams and that buys her a higher placing on the list (and makes me re-examine other Ravens) but I kind of loathe her outfit so points deducted for that.
Getting Fairest Raven is stupidly pretty and the GF line is one of my favorites so I'm completely biased. And Evil Raven is just amazing and I wish she'd shown up on any of the sales that didn't require a kidney handed over to get her. Instead I love from afar, I suppose.

Ashlynn Ella:
Mirror Beach -> Sig -> Fairest on Ice <-> Through the Woods -> Fairest on Ice -> Legacy Day
Ashlynn is an odd duck for me. I think she's got one of the prettier face molds (for awhile she had the prettiest) but she also tends to look very, very blank. When you combine that with how little they've done with her in any format, well, she tends to be very forgettable. Which is a shame because her dolls are lovely and I think there's so much they could do with her if they wanted to.
We never got the second wave of Legacy Day dolls around here, so my case of Want What You Don't Have may have elevated LD too high, but I'm thinking no. She's a lovely doll (lovely, say it again, self) and I like her outfit a lot more than most of her others, so throw those two together and LD comes out on top. Huzzah!
Mirror Beach is so low because it's a beach line that doesn't really need to exist. At all. It wasn't like it was massively cheaper than the regular line (and is, in fact, more expensive these days than the Sig lines) nor did it do anything really fun with the idea, and it wasn't a tie in to anything else. It just... was. Through the Woods is higher than sig because I think the doll itself is prettier, and Fairest tied with TtW because honestly, I can't decide which I like better. If Fairest on Ice had the curls the promo promised, she'd probably actually be number one. But she doesn't (or didn't on the one doll I saw) sooooo... there you go.

Blondie Lockes:
Just Sweet -> Through the Woods -> Sig -> Thronecoming -> Enchanted Picnic
Blondie's sort of the opposite of Ashlynn for me in terms of how EAH deals with her. Ashlynn's pretty but they do nothing with her. Blondie's cute enough though she really does look an awful lot like Apple, however she's got a personality all her own. Perhaps too much personality.
In any case, I really like her Picnic doll and I keep talking myself off the ledge at work because we're freakishly overpriced. Teddy Bear purse! C'mon! So cute. And since EAH has stopped with the insane prices at say, Walmart or Target, she's much more affordable. She will be mine.
Every other version is... enh? I have Thronecoming because I like her hair buns. Her sig's outfit is adorable and I want it for Picnic Blondie. TtW looks like her hair got caught in the rain on a day when she should've been washing it (mine does that. Not a good look.) and Just Sweet is cute enough that she technically belongs ahead of TtW but I like TtW's lamp enough to rank her higher than Blondie wearing a cupcake liner.
eta: Self, you are wrong. Cupcake Liner Blondie is superior to Hair Day Blondie any day of the week except whichever day you made your rankings, apparently. See? Things change!

Poppy O'Hair:
Sig -> Through the Woods -> Fairest on Ice
Sig is the only one with proper Poppy hair (so far), but there is... a lot going on with the twins' outfits in their sig release. Just a lot. I dig the TtW doll better as a whole (outfit + doll) than I do Fairest, but Fairest is stupidly pretty in person. Like you see her and you think, "I could totally cut her hair and not make a mess of it, yes." Which is a LIE and you and I both know it.

Holly O'Hair:
Spring UnSprung -> Sig -> Sugar Coated -> DRAGON GAMES
I cheated here because I'm not really mentioning dolls that haven't come out yet, but I want DG Holly so much that it's why I will probably skip Sugar Coated and I need to remind myself of this because LOOK AT HER.
Reasoning for the lineup: SU hurts my eyes though I do like aspects of Holly's look (the tights). Sig is lovely but for some reason the darker makeup on SC makes me like her more even if the outfit isn't necessarily a good thing. But Sc's got that really cute oven mitt and yes, I am totally making decisions based on the most insane things, okay?

Cerise Hood:
Spring UnSprung -> Enchanted Picnic -> Sig-> Hat Tastic -> Legacy Day
Just repeat everything I've said about loving LD2 way more than LD1 and being cheesed that we never got 2 because 1 is still flippin' shelf sitting to this day. Hat Tastic gives us red streaks and Cerise just looks a smidge happier and I dig it. Sig, it really depends on which look they give her. Cerise can look very pretty or she can look like a rat and it's very hit or miss on her. I like the Picnic dolls a lot and SU Cerise is actually one of the few from that line that I want, so it being so far down on the list is proving just how nifty Cerise is.
I didn't list Cerise Wolf because I'm one of those who still sulks a little at not having her. It's true. I sulk.

Cedar Wood:
Spring Unsprung -> Sugar Coated -> Sig -> Hat Tastic
Cedar, I love you so much so why don't I have more of you? WHY?
Spring Unsprung is one of those lines you either love or hate and I felt that Cedar just looked wayyyyyy too much like Briar. She looked way too busy in the movie, too, so this isn't just a doll criticism. There was/is just too much going on, really, for me to keep up. Sugar Coated is cute but I haven't seen enough of her so that's why she's coming in third. I like Sig Cedar very much, but I'm a sucker for the Hat Tastic dolls so... there you are. Honestly, for me they're probably tied but I'm currently very much in a want what you can't have frame of mind, so HT edges Sig out.

Ginger Breadhouse:
Sugar Coated -> Sig
There's no real reasoning behind this aside from Ginger's sig version being adorable and me not having the SC playset. I do wish they'd do less playsets, though. Clearly, Ginger was bound to have one because of her love of cooking, but I only have so much space, guys. D:

Cupid:
Sig -> Heartstruck -> Through the Woods -> Thronecoming
Annnnnnnnnd I'm just going to say this now: Thronecoming is my hands down, absolute favorite EAH doll. I think she's gorgeous and perfection and it kills me that they basically had to give her away because they couldn't sell her for whatever reason. She's just so pretty people could not deal, I guess.
Anyway, I like all variations of EAH Cupid. I want them all. *grabby hands* I think Sig Cupid is pretty and her outfit is less "my eyes, my eyes, gauge my eyes out so I don't have to see all the plastic!" than her Heartstruck look, but the doll herself is less pretty than the other versions, so she comes in last for now. Heartstruck is very pretty but there's just SO MUCH going on that I start to lose my mind if I stare too long. And Through the Woods is just so pretty. Which is why she's not one of the ones loitering in my stores for some "clearance" price that's higher than I would have charged as a regular price for this line. Sigh.

Kitty Cheshire:
Okay, this one is really, really difficult. So I'm gonna fudge this just a little.
Based on outfits:
Way Too Wonderland -> Spring UnSprung -> Sig
By far, Sig has the best outfit. Kitty's other two outfits are just insane because both lines are meant to be fantastically over the top. SU is miles away better than her WtW look, but the Sig look blows them both so far out of the water that this is not a competition.
The dolls themselves, however? A different matter completely.
Sig -> Spring UnSprung -> Way Too Wonderland
First, all three are different shades of purple. Good to know, eh? Second, I was prepared to be so disinterested in WtW Kitty that I was blown away by how gorgeous she is. Honestly, I'm half tempted to put her in Sig Kitty's stuff and call it a day.
If we average it out, SU inches out ahead but she was also a beast to find for the longest time (and only online for me) sooooo... Kitty is just as difficult to classify as one would imagine she would be based on her character alone. ;)

Duchess Swan:
Fairest on Ice <--> Sig TIE
They're both super pretty. Sig Duchess is literally looking down her nose at the other dolls on her shelf with her because she's so awesome (and tall).

Lizzie Hearts:
Sig <-> Way Too Wonderland -> Spring UnSprung
Lizzie's SU is the exception that proves the rule, I guess. Her SU doll is so pretty that if we hadn't been spectacularly broke at the time, I think Mums would have shelled out for her right then and there when we first saw her in person. Mums even looked at the sig version and declared, in no uncertain terms, that the playset doll was so much prettier. (She really is gorgeous.) I'd forgotten that Lizzie, like the other Wonderlandians, is on a short body, so she's like this teeny tiny dictator. It's so adorable.
Sig Lizzie should've had her hair done properly. W2W should have had her dress so I could just display her in the aqua dress of awesome if I wanted. Instead, Lagoona is going to sharesies. I like them both about equally, though, so I put them as a tie. One minute I like one more, the next I switch.
SU? Perfection has been achieved. I'd like to pretend she dressed everyone else up in crap so she could look that much prettier but she's a "designer" so I'm going to pretend she takes after her mother and that her taste is seriously questionable at times. :P
Lizzie is going to be one of the characters I'm pretty sure will be a buy all versions of her doll. Teeny, tiny dictator with a heart of gold. ♥

Madeline Hatter:
Mirror Beach -> Sugar Coated -> Way too Wonderland-> Sig -> Getting Fairest -> Legacy Day -> Hat Tastic
So Maddie's my favorite character but she's frequently not my favorite doll because Wonderland is awfully chaotic and Maddie is pretty much the embodiment of that because of the whole Mad aspect. Maddie forgives me because she's awesome. We didn't rank Giant Maddie because she's out but not all that prevalent yet and also I'm not ready to face the fact that she's so painfully dead in the eyes. Let me live in ignorance a little bit longer, okay?
Mirror Beach and Sugar Coated are both pretty far down because they're basic lines that aren't basic priced in any way and enh. SC beats MB because at least SC has some visual interest going on. WtW would be higher but the color combo does very little for me and she's got a serious case of crazy curled box hair.
Sig would be higher but this is the point where my list hits the Maddies I love so... I love her, I do, but I like the others more. GF is one of my favorite lines as I've said a billion times and while Maddie isn't normally served well by looking so serious, it works for this somehow.
LD2 is one I tracked down and got on sale online somewhere and it's one where detail makes all the difference, really. Hat Tastic is the prettiest of Maddies for me and I'd have multiples but who needs that flipping playset? No one (well, not me)! Anyway, she's stupidly pretty. Thumbs up, would definitely recommend.
Your turn.

Apple White:

Let me preface my Apple entry with this: the more fandom hated Apple, the more I loved her. I didn't agree with her, but I understood her and why she was doing what she was doing. I never know how I'll feel about the deluxe versions that break out the 'real eyelashes' because some dolls I love and some, well... no. Legacy Day Apple is one who has an awesome promo pic but in reality things start to wobble. I really like her shoes, but I like them because someone compared them to being more of a... not stripper, but call girl kind of thing. So really, my taste should not be trusted. :P

Just a lot.

I like the Picnic dolls a lot and SU Cerise is actually one of the few from that line that I want, so it being so far down on the list is proving just how nifty Cerise is.

Ginger Breadhouse:
Sugar Coated -> Sig
There's no real reasoning behind this aside from Ginger's sig version being adorable and me not having the SC playset. I do wish they'd do less playsets, though. Clearly, Ginger was bound to have one because of her love of cooking, but I only have so much space, guys. D:

Your turn.
