Fashionista seems a bit of a misnomer...
Feb. 1st, 2016 08:34 amSooooooo... that Barbie thing. Let's tackle that first since it involves less typing on my part.
Barbie, you might have heard (and considering I heard about it from non-doll people first, it's quite likely), has introduced three new body types to their arsenal.

Oooh. Ahh.
I'd like to say I'm super enthusiastic about this, but I'm still waiting to see 'real' pictures because while Mattel is pretty good about not doing a complete bait and switch on us with their promos, there's always just enough variance to make or break a doll in lines I don't feel compelled to buy them all. And because I'm not a masochist of that order, I do not ever feel the need to buy all the Barbies ever. Which is good because that's just madness.
I mentioned this in my last post, but really, it bears repeating. The list of dolls whose looks I like in both doll and outfit form is very, very small. :/ Some might change once owner pictures surface, but until then, I'm forced to go off what I see and what I've been conditioned to expect. I will say that you can order/pre-order a good chunk of these dolls (all, not just petite) and we're going right off the Shop Mattel website. That link will take you to the See All section, which includes the 'Original' Barbies but I'm not sharing them here.
We shall begin with the petites.

First row, L-R:
One of the more expensive dolls, since she comes with three outfits. I like the doll herself well enough, but she's one who definitely will hinge on how much I like the non-promo pics since the promo pics make me hate most of her sartorial choices. :P I like the dress, oddly enough, and her shoes (both sets) are rather nifty, but her regular outfit is doing her no favors (c'mon, even I know that the shorter you are, the more you pay attention to the length of the skirt and the height of your boots)...
#2: I was all set to include her as one of the few I like as is, and then I read the description. And it says she's got blonde hair with dark roots, right on trend. Um... wait. What? So she's a likely want, but I'm a little worried.
#3: Behold, a mythical want doll/outfit! I think she looks gorgeous, although I will say that the only thing unusual about her is her height.
#4: I want that outfit like burning, but I hate that haircut so... will buy, will resent the whole time. :P
#5: She's cuter in closeup than she is in this shot, but again, meh to the outfit. Also, I wish these were articulated. :/
Second row, L-R:
I... hate her secondary outfits. I really, really do. I might like the other denim outfit styled not together, but as is? No. I'm drawn to the doll, although she's another who is cuter on closeup as from far away she looks kind of off, proportionally speaking. That might simply be because my brain is still trying to match these up to standard Barbie and that's just not going to work. Love the hair.
#2: That purse is adorable but I kind of hate everything, so watch her be one whose owner pictures make me want. :P
Next up, Tall.

Tall! Woo! I count as tall, right? I mean, clearly I'm more obviously curvy, but I'm decently tall, dammit.
Row 1:
#1: I hate this haircut on everyone, ever. I'm sorry, I just hate it. Also, that blue dress is tacky as hell in the promo pictures and no. Just... no. However! I really like the other two outfits. So, I will buy this and complain bitterly.
#2: Remember how I complained about the proportions looking off because I'm expecting standard Barbie and obviously these aren't? 2 here just looks stretched, from head to toe. Which is a shame because otherwise she'd make my mythical list.
#3: She's missing something that makes her totally wow me, but I think she's adorable and will likely snag her.
Row 2:
#1: I love redheads but this outfit is something I just cannot get behind. At all. You got hosed, pretty. Hosed so badly. :/
#2: I like the doll, I kind of love the outfits. Whyyyyyyy aren't you guys articulated?
Row 3:
#1: I kind of love her, I kind of don't. I really think she's one who will look better in reality, but I'm not sure. Those are some fluffy bangs and that usually gets gelled into submission but not always.
#2: Mums hates the outfit, I just hate the yellow accessories. Want the doll enough, don't fully care about the rest.
And finally, the curvy girls.

You guys... I... *bites lip* I don't know. I just don't... look. Just look.
Row 1:
#1: I kind of hate pants like that in general, but I think it's cute enough overall. I worry that the doll's eyes look washed out but she's one of my want nows, so I'm probably going to risk it.
#2: I keep thinking she's got the half shaved head thing, but she doesn't. I think each set gets a very safe doll, and she's one of the safe dolls in the curvy girls. I'll be keeping an eye out for owner pictures, but she's not totally wowing me yet.
#3: I know I'm supposed to love her, but something just isn't right. I don't know if it's her hair or what. I figure she'll be one of the first to hit people's hands and I'm waiting.
Row 2:
#1: She's our other safe bet. I'm fence sitting on her.
#2: Sweet frick. This is a doll I rather love but holy hell, just about everything else is seventeen kinds of fugly. Ugh. :/
Row 3:
#1: Maybe curvy just got a lot of safe bets to make up for that one in the last row. :P This doll is very pretty but she's not singing my name yet.
#2: Originally I recoiled from these outfits, but then I saw true horror and took a second look. Pretty cute and I can hear this doll speaking. Which is weird because I honestly look at her and I can hear someone's voice in my head. I just don't like the red lipstick. Nothing about any of these outfits says red lipstick.
Overall, I'm still not sure what to think. I'm super curious and I wish more were available. I also wish the Fashionista line would live up to its name.
Thoughts? Opinions? Any you're super excited to see, or any you're left wondering how they made it past the idea stage?

Date: 2016-02-01 05:49 pm (UTC)The pin heads definitely happens to be something that's working against them, but I can never be sure how much of that is an actual thing and how much is me just being used to giant heads on dolls these days. :/ It sort of looks like they might've made the arms a little bigger (and holy hell, scrolling up to see the tall body's arms and they look like toothpicks. What is seen can never be unseen!) but I can't be sure. Yet. How did I not notice the sleevelessness. D:
*snort* I think you nailed my problem with that doll. She's giving me school teacher trying to look younger and it's kind of odd. But I can hear her. Some of these look really young (looking at you, rocknroll plaid in the short section) and some, well, look older.
I think I'd be happier and more excited if these were as nifty as the Fashionistas used to be. Also, articulation, guys. It's not like you can just rebody these. I mean, you could, but you'd lose what makes them interesting, dammit.
