Sunday was the kind of rainy day you wish for and long for in the dead of summer when everything is too hot. It was overcast with a little sun basically long enough for me to go swimming and then maybe an hour after I got home, the skies resumed their greenish-grey hue and the rain began.
I loved it. It also helped me decide to give Stranger Things a try. I'd been hearing good things but I didn't know much about it other than it starred Winona Ryder as a mother whose son goes missing and was a serious throwback to the 80's. Throw in some obviously strange happenings and that's the extent of my knowledge. I'm not even sure that little summary doesn't surpass my active memory of what I was in for Sunday afternoon.

After perusing youtube, I'm pretty sure I never even saw a trailer for this show. Huh.

Still. When life gives you a dreary, spooky, awesome day, you don't waste it on fluffy feel good stuff, you try out the unknown.


Guys. GUYS. I need someone to geek out with me over this thing, okay? It's eight episodes. They're all a bit longer than your average TV episode but under an hour. I watched 'em all in one go, stopping only for food and because I had a few chores so I used the next episode as a reward for adulting it up.
I'd only intended on watching one, maybe two episodes.

It really is that good. I'm torn on whether to go full on spoiler or continue to try and lure you to the Hawkins side and let you discover the awesomeness for yourself. What to do, what to do...

I'm not often early to the party so I'm unaccustomed to having to wait for people to hop on the bandwagon. So I'm gonna wait a few more days before I go full on spoiler blather, and that's mostly because I've tried and my brain just keeps leaping from one thing to another and it's all terribly disjointed and this show deserves better. Next time, spoilers! You've been warned.

Oh. I will say this much up front: if you're sensitive to light/have epilepsy/something along those lines, you're gonna want to sit this one out. There is a LOT of flickering light in certain episodes, especially the finale.

And y'know what? We're deep enough in The Comments of Livejournal here that no one will stumble across spoilers, so let's talk about STEVE. Steve is Schroedinger's Douchebag, existing in a quantum state of Jerkiness. Is he a villain? Is he a hero? Every time i would be solidly on one side of the fence or the other, something would happen that would violently shift me over to the other side!

*snort* Oh, Steve. I actually didn't dislike him as much as I gather a lot of people did. Probably because his jerk friends were right there, begging me to want them punched in the face. And then I'd wonder why he was friends with them since they were so friggin' obnoxious and... you get the idea.

My biggest thing with Steve is that when Nancy and Jonathon are summoning The Thing and Steve appears with his face still all smashed and Nancy throws him out... why did the thing not just snatch and grab Steve outside? Does the thing find Steve too douchetastic to even consider him a possible snackable?

The reasoning I came up with is that The Thing (aka "Sharkbear") is only attracted to fresh, wet blood. Good old Steve had been cleaning and icing and taking care of the wounds all day long, all we see there is bruising and maybe a scab or two.

Yup... from now on, The Thing shall be known as Sharkbear :)

Fair enough conclusion for Sharkbear. I'd wondered if the freshness had anything to do with it and that was just as weird as I thought it would be to say. :P
