New shows and Hugo
Sep. 21st, 2016 11:47 amAh, fall. When new television shows full of promise roll out. Not to be confused with mid-season when shows that either needed tinkering or are likely to tank when up against too much competition roll out. :P (And I say this as someone who has loved many a mid-season show, but they do not tend to be long for this world.)
So far I've sampled two new shows and the results have been mixed. First up?
The Good Place. I thought this one looked super interesting because of the premise (The Good Place is Heaven and Kristen Bell's character gets in by mistake. Wackiness might possibly ensue) and because it'll be airing with Superstore which, btw, you should totally be watching because it's hilarious and returns tomorrow. If you've ever worked retail, even for a day, you'll appreciate it.
I dunno. I'm not really sure how much you can spoil for TGP, honestly at this point, but hey. It's a comedy, yes? But I only laughed aloud once. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because I don't always laugh out loud at things I find funny or amusing or even like, even in comedy form.
But... I also didn't find a lot of it funny. But I'm not sure how much I was supposed to find funny, y'know? Pilots are weird, weird creatures and this one took zags where normally you'd have a zig and I'm curious to see where it goes. It's not an immediate yes and I don't think I'll be grabbing anyone this week and saying, "You need to watch this" but if someone asked me if I thought it was worth a go? Sure. I think TGP has the potential to be a good show and I already like some of the characters, which is more than I can say for "Guilt" and I also liked that show. :P
So this is one I'll give a little bit of time to and then we'll revisit.
The other one was This Is Us. I went in knowing the following: a big to-do was made about Milo's butt in the trailer (which I did not watch), everyone's lives eventually intersect somehow, and there's a twist. That's it. Oh, and Mandy Moore's in it.
Spoilers for this one because duh, we're gonna talk about the twist.
No. Seriously. The twist. It's going to be spoiled. Click away, my loves. Click away!
Ready?
Okay.
So who else saw that one coming? Of course Jack and Rebecca are in 79/80 (because why else would anyone around my age have pictures labeled Family Pictures 70something-79. I assure you, we have pictures from the 70's, but they frickin' aren't labeled as such. :P) and of course they're the parents of the twins.
Annnnnnnnd if it weren't for the whole "everyone's lives are entwined even in the pilot" bit and the twist, I might not have guessed the second twist (not Randall's birth father dying. Duh, of course he is) and it did take longer, but yes. Of course Jack was all "look, I said we were coming out with three babies and three babies it's gonna be."
That said... so good. So. Good. I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out and I need more now and this waiting thing is not good for my sanity.
For my lovely
luxken27, you might enjoy it simply because of how many fandom streams it seems to possibly cross for you.
Ah, 27 years since Hugo. So old. Still, it's weird how vividly you remember some things while others are a blur.
