Hurricane update! Because let's be honest, that's all anyone around here is going to be talking about for the next six days anyway. When I went to sleep last night after the 11pm update, they still had it pretty uncertain beyond somewhere overnight Friday into Saturday being when we'd get our brush with Matthew, though they did caution that Friday during the afternoon would likely bring power outages due to the wind and rain.

I woke up this morning to no updates from the locals and a new model that shows the storm spending an extra day with Florida/Georgia and not getting here til Sunday.

I also woke up to the news that due to the evacuation and everyone losing their minds extra early, the gas stations are out of gas (even the ones who decided to go ahead and price gouge), there's no water, and basically pandemonium reigns supreme.

On the plus side, it's nice and breezy and chilly this morning. I made it to the recycle bins with extra stuff right before they came and took stuff away, so victory dance there. I'm off to take my shower and then do some laundry before I poke the laptop and see how many billions of updates it wants me to do.


Not hurricane related: what do we know about the Gaga MH doll other than what she looks like? Price? Availability? What? My attention span is currently shot so...

Yeah, the weather pr0n is making the BBC World Service now, so I had a check this morning and yeah, it's definitely not looking good :( According to my local weather nerds, it looks like Matthew's gonna hug the coast and slow down as it nears you guys (looking at early Sunday instead of Saturday?):

MATTHEW: This dangerous hurricane has been battering the Bahamas; it is packing sustained winds of 125 mph, and is moving northwest. Next in line is the Atlantic coast of Florida, where hurricane warnings remain in effect.

Forecasting impact with a hurricane moving parallel to the coast is much more challenging that one moving into the coast at a perpendicular angle. A small deviation to the right or left will make a huge difference in impact, but in this case you have to prepare for a worst case scenario.

LOOP DE LOOP: Models are now in good agreement about the loop scenario off the coast; Matthew could make a second landfall in South Florida early next week as a much weaker tropical storm, then emerging into the Gulf of Mexico. It remains to be seen if strengthening is possible after that happens; there is little to no skill in forecasting placement and intensity of a tropical cyclone beyond five days.

Meanwhile, we're up to Stage 2 drought water-conservation measures. Craziness!

Stay safe, my friend! I guess it's a good thing that everybody's losing their minds rather early in the game, eh? ETA: Yeah, the gas shortage might have something to do with the busted pipeline from a couple of weeks ago, that cut off supply from Texas up the eastern seaboard to New York...

Yup, the one constant through this whole thing has been how slow it'll move once it gets to SC. It's one of the things that I'm least looking forward to. :/

On the other hand, for some reason loop de loop always makes me laugh so while I feel bad for anyone who might get this sucker twice (even as a seriously reduced storm) the way it went from being an outlier of a possibility to being the most likely is just fantastic.

Assuming my sleep addled brain is making sense of things properly, it looks like it should be weakening and moving to the east just enough at just the right time to do less damage to us. I hope. Then again, this storm keeps changing its mind so who the hell knows.

If I could send you the rain we're sure to get (well, maybe half the rain and not all at once because that tends to lead to bad things) I would.
