Riverdale episode 2.
Kay. I'm not sure how with it I am at the moment so we're just going to throw this out into the ether and we'll see if anything sticks.
The bad: Archie asks Grundy if this thing between them is real, because if it's not he doesn't know what he's protecting.
Look, I know Archie is supposed to be naive at times (possibly most of the time) but come the fuck on! Grundy already told him why they can't go to the cops about hearing a gunshot the day Jason died* and he didn't give her the "what are these words, what do they mean" face then so it's not like he didn't understand. Hell, I'm pretty sure your average high school student realizes on some level that them having relations with their teacher, even if it's during the summer and not during school, is grounds to get the teacher fired and probably jailed if the kid is underage. So. Is he trying to kind of blackmail her back into the relationship of Ew Gross or is he just criminally blinded by lust/stupid? I'd think more of him if it was blackmail, but since the show is trying to convince us he's a fine, upstanding citizen with a working moral compass... I'm thinking he's just not smart enough for this. Sigh.
They sort of make up for it with Archie deciding he has to tell Weatherbee (who, like Pop Tate, is now black) what he knows. Which isn't a lot regarding the murder, btw.
The best: Cheryl's meltdown when #9 comes bursting out onto the field and it's a redhead, but not her redhead. I like that someone had a freakout over Archie replacing Jason (was there literally no other number you could've gone with, Coach?) and the similarities and I really like that it was Cheryl.
Elsewhere in between: Betty's actress is better than she needs to be and I'm grateful. I dislike Mrs. Cooper. A lot. She's over the top awful. Just needlessly awful, though I guess we did need a parent we weren't supposed to like and she definitely fits the bill.
I like that they didn't completely have Betty being fine with Veronica and Archie (who aren't Ronnie and Archie yet) but that she tried, no matter how she phrased it to Kevin... and then she realized she wasn't ready. Granted it only took another couple of days (if that) for her to be 'over' it but I like that it wasn't as easy as they all thought/wanted it to be.
Cheryl's red widow pin made me cackle. Betty's takedown of Cheryl, also fun. Still not sure why anyone would elevate Jason to the status he clearly had prior to his death because, well... he was clearly a jerk to the ladies and all his photos have him with a very punchable face. He's most interesting in his boat ride with Cheryl, so far.
Show, don't gimme flashbacks to last week's episode. That's lazy. Gimme flashbacks I haven't seen yet, dammit.
Midge is mentioned, Moose is shoved back into the closet, Reggie picks a fight and Jughead and Archie make amends. I wonder how the bombshell at the end will affect Jughead's newfound friendliness. My interest in Jason's death is also higher due to Cheryl's comments about him coming back and the whole dying a week later thing.
Overall, I'm still intrigued by the show but I'm clearly counting down the seconds til the Grundy/Archie hookup hour is over. OVER.
He was supposed to come back. -
Cheryl Blossom, obviously about her twin, Jason.
