Jan. 27th, 2022 09:12 amOkay, I truly need to get this out of my system fully before figuring out my review for The Chain which is a book I looked at when I was at work last week and then promptly snagged from Libby. Essentially the plot is this: Rachel's daughter is kidnapped and in addition to having to pay a ransom, Rachel must kidnap someone else's child to keep the chain going. If you immediately heard Fleetwood Mac's The Chain, congrats, that's intentional. Which I cheered about when I read that in the opening bit of the book. Huzzah!
What I absolutely DID NOT expect, however, was to have our criminal 'mastermind' take inspiration for The Chain from Mary Anne's Bad Luck Mystery. To say I cackled when I read that would be a severe understatement. LO-fucking-L indeed.
I've never read any of the author's work before and to be fair, I'm not really sure The Chain really made me want to given that it does indeed suffer terribly from "clearly wanted this to be a movie" for the second half of the book. But I did rally enough to cackle once more when one of the evil twins is taken out via a handy shard of glass. Seriously, I'm sure there was no Evil Twin nod intended but OHMYGLOB. Legit cackled at that.
